96 altima after changing the distributer and plugs, forgive me this is my daughters car, The car did have an irregular idle I suspected a vacuum leak somewhere or TPS an idle problem is just that...this vehicle will not start. Ugh, I can pull a plug and check compression if the timing is correct would a CPS be the culpret? However its my understanding timing chains will stretch and could the harmonic balancer be an issue? Then again the ignition system could be fouling distributors. No backfires no start.

If no check engine light is on then you have no sensor issues with a few exceptions, one is the MAF sensor and the other the ECT sensor. I think you may need to clean the idle control system parts, read below how to do that.

You can in most cases repair this slow speed stall or unstable idle by cleaning the engine throttle valve and the idle speed control valve using a product called CRC Spray Throttle valve cleaner. Spray the cleaner into the air intake of the engine with the hose removed from the throttle body, the engine will try to stall so hold up the idle speed manually. Once you have used up about 1/2 can of the cleaner stall the engine out while spraying and turn the key off, disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 minutes and then reconnect and drive the car for a about 25 miles of varied driving modes. If this doesn't cure the problem you may need the fuel injectors professionally cleaned by the dealer service dept.

Be aware that this vehicle has a low oil sensor. Below 1 quart low will disable ignition(NO SPARK) Check oil often. Perform an OBDII scan with a print out. The print out will be your guide to parts replacement. If you get it to run, the cheapest approach is to Replace Air filter. Also the Fuel filter and install a can of B&G44K fuel additive to the fuel. It will condition the fuel pump and injectors. The B&G is only available at dealerships(11.00 a can at Toyota).Do not substitute, it is the best on the market. Do these 3 things every 30,000 mile for continued performance. Due to the age (1999) I would recommend changing the timing belt and water pump as it runs off of the belt and you are already in there. I don't think it has timing chains. Do not throw the distributor away, its probably OK.

SOURCE: my car turns over but will not start

1.Check for spark.
2. check to make sure ing.wires are not crossed or mixed up.
You have gas so its not the fuel pump.
3.try taping the starter with a hammer while some one you trust turns the key.If she starts up this would be a bad solinoid and you need a new starter.

SOURCE: 1997 Nissan Altima with idle jump

The description sounds like a technical Service Bulletin Nissan came out with on your car. It fits your description to a "T".
However, the codes you are getting are not what the service bulletin reports. The code they say it sets is DTC 0400 which relates to an irregular EGR operation, causing a problem where it will not maintain an idle or Will idle roughly. There is not a recall campaign on this item.

As far as misfire problems: Nissan had a service bulletin out on problem ECM's which caused this problem. Check with your local dealer. This may possibly be covered under warranty.
The reference number is NTB97-026 The bulletin was issued March,12,1997 There was no recall on this item.
Good luck to both of you.

SOURCE: 1997 Nissan Hardbody has rough idle/surges/stalls

the 2001 altima is what i have and I had the same problem as you. turned out to be a bad head gasket factory used cheap ones for a few years before they found the problem. one way to test this is to get a can of carborator cleaner and spray it around the area where the head meets the block under the intake problem should be around the 4th cylinder or close to driver side. if the head gasket is bad the rough idle will smooth out while you are spraying the head.

1998 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE wont idle runs really rough

Look for a vacuum leak at the intake manifold. Spray (flammable) brake clean around the area while the engine is running and look for the idle to change. Also check for a vac leak at the brake booster by pinching the Vac supply line and see if the idle changes.

Surging idle 2003 nissan altima s

I think you have an air leak, a vacuum line loose, or possible intake manifold gasket leaking, maybe your big air intake hose is leaking. spray carb cleaner or soapy water around mating surface of intake and on vacuum lines and connections. If idle changes, there is your leak. good luck.

Starts cold wont start when warm. I have changed the coil, plugs, wires, distributer, rotor, and ignition module. the idle also messed up at the same time, its idling high enough to spin the tires at a...

now is the time to start checking for vacuum leaks. I just fixed a 96 F-150 today with a cracked intake manifold. Look at all of your vacuum lines under the hood, that may include lines to the vacuum booster, the pcv valve, the egr valve, the air box, and in rare cases, even the battery box. If you can't find any leaks there, get a can of ether, start the truck, and spray it at the points where the intake meets the heads. If the RPM revs high or dips really low, you have a leak either in the manifold itself (like a crack) or the gasket has failed and it's time for a new one. I hope this helps.

My 96 Altima revs to 5000 RPM as soon as I start it and runs between 1.5-2000 rpms at idle, what should I do to fix this?

Check the idle control valve. See if adjustments can resolve the issue. If it does not check for leaks in the vacuum hoses and have them cleaned there might be some debris. Some issues related to this may be caused by wiring issues or a computer box issue.
