Most likely, the problem you are dealing with is a dead battery. The reason this is apparent is you said "there is no clicking noise like a bad starter, it just does nothing..." Normally, if there is any charge at all in the battery, you will get the clicking noise you describe as the ignition circuit is trying to charge the solenoid that turns over the starter and turns on the engine. If you have a battery jumper box available, your S40 will probably start at the first flick of you ignition key if your battery is fairly new. To hook up the battery box, just place the clips as you would standard jumper cables, red to red (+) on the battery and black (-) to a good ground point on the engine (it has to be solid metal-to-metal contact). Then turn key to fire up the engine. Once your car has started you have to run it about 10 miles to put any sort of charge back into the battery. If the battery won't hold the charge then it is time to replace it.

Bad connection on cable ends or where they connect to battery. Quick check is if you have a good set of jumper cables, use the jumper cable as a replacement for what maybe the defective one. Hook negative cable good to battery neg. post and then put other side on neg cable to engine ground on block. See if it cranks, if it does than the trouble is on the neg. cable. If not then put positive cable on pos. post of battery. Then put other side of pos. cable on the starter post, try to start. If it cranks then the trouble is on the pos side of cable. First, leave the cables on longer, a good 10 or 15 minutes. When you hear that clicking noise, it's because there is not enough power available to turn the starter. It means you need more power. Leave the jumper cables on for a few more minutes and you will have the power you need to start the car.

Once the car is started, remove the jumper cables and pull the positive (Red) cable off the terminal on your battery. If the car stays running, get a new battery. If the car dies immediately after pulling the positive battery cable off, then your altenator has gone out. The altenator is the electrical generator that provides electricity to your lights, engine, stereo, AC, etc. It should be putting out about 14.2 volts. Since your car is a 12 volt system, there are a couple of extra volts to spare, which are used to recharge the battery. It takes a lot of power from a battery to start the vehicle. That's why the alternator is there to takeover after startup, plus recharge your battery in the process.

Clicking noise usually means a bad connection at the battery terminal. It can also be a bad connection at the starter or solenoid.
Re-clean and tighten battery cables,and if that doesn't do it,re-tighten starter connections.Don't overtighten as copper-bronze studs can break easily.If your Ranger is standard shift (4 or 5-speed), don't get under the car or in front of it without the battery cables disconnectede or the shifter in neutral,as any current you inadvertently send thru the starter can engage it and run you over or knock the vehicle off jackstands or blocks. don-ohio

It could be as simple as corroded battery terminals, or it could be you need a starter. Start by checking the battery cables - both ends. If they are corroded, take them loose and clean them. Always remove the ground cable first (the black one) and install it last. A coating of dielectric grease will help keep this from re-occurring. Once it is determined that the cables are OK, and if it still just clicks, check the battery itself. If you have access to another battery that you know is good, switch them or use jumper cables to hook it to yours and see if it starts. If it still just clicks, you probably need a starter.

if the car battery goes flat you must first reset the immobiliser BEFORE you turn the engine over,otherwise it will run then stop .the clicking noise is the starter solenoid trying to engage but not having enough power to kick in properly.reconnect the correct guage of jump leads.(heavy duty)

you have a bad starter switch

key off and out,diconnect negitive side of battrey then postive.clean terimals,charge battrey,connect postive cable (with key off)connect negitive.and start.
your dead battrey is taking up a big load on system,so when you boost it the dead battrey is taking it all the starter is geeting vey little.thats the clicking.
if you dont have a charger dicconect both terminals the same way again,put the jumper cables on the dead battrey.let it charge battrey for 10 15 mins .the longer the better.remover jumpers.
with key off and out conected battrey terminals.connect jumper cables and start.
let me know if it start or not hopefully the key hasnt lost its coding.

This is a common indicator of a dead battery. You may see some lights and the radio may play, but there is not enough power to turn the engine over. What you must do is one of two things:

1. Get a jump start from a freind.
-This is done by putting the vechicles' front bumpers right in front of each other (Close but not touching).
- Open both hoods.
- Pull out your handy jumper cables (or borrow a friends).
- Connect one end of the red jumper to the red post (positive) on the dead battery.
- The post is the bit of metal sticking out the side or top usually surrounded by either black or red.
- Once you have connected to the Positive post, connect the other side of the red cable to the good battery's positive post.
- Connect the black or negative cable to the negative/black post on the good battery.
- At this point, look at the dead car's frame around the engine. Look near the battery for a piece of metal on the frame. Clamp your jumper cable to the metal. Be aware the cable may spark. This is normal.
- Count to three then try to start the dead vehicle.
- Remove the jumper cable opposite how you put it on (ie. negative off dead vehicle first, then negative off good vehicle, etc.)

If this does not work after a few tries, you may have to remove your battery and bring it in. Have a qualified mechanic do this if you are not sure how to do this.

For about 2 wks ive had some trouble starting my Infiniti G37. every once and a while when i start up my truck it had some trouble but it would eventually start. it would only take me about once or twice to start it. i thought it was a cold engine problem. but now the ****** wont even start at all. all i can hear is the clicking noise. i know its not the battery cause it shows it is pretty well charged on the instrument panel window when my truck is actually running. so not being much of a gearhead can anyone help me out. is it something i can fix without getting any parts? or am i doomed to being a whole new starter. btw it started today with the help of jumper cables. but like i said i dont think its the battery but i can be wrong.
