Problem with 1997 Chevrolet Lumina
i have a 1997 lumina with 3.1L. the problem started with loss of power under load and p0300 code. check coils and vacuum leaks both OK.change spark plugs and wires.[same problem] check compression OK. change #1 02 sensor. engine starts, idles, drives and shifts smooth when cold, after temperature reaches 190 - 200 engine looses power under load [in park accelerates without any problems] .when in drive idles good and there is throttle responsein the first quater of the gas pedal travel, then there is no throttle response until the pedal is pushed all the way down, when the transmission downshifts and the engine revs to over 3000 rpm and the transmission upshifts, and i will maintain any speed it gets to until i have to change the speed , when the problem starts all over again. But if i disconnect the plug from #1 02 sensor and run it that way ,the problem disappears, the engine starts, idles and runs good, smooth shifting, smooth throttle up and down at any temperature and any speed, no misfire code and no loss of power. If i connect the plug of #1 02 sensor the problem comes back again.
i hammer drilled holes in my cat because i thought it may have been plugged.compressions good reading 160+ no oil loss or burning but the fluttering sputer very much seems like the cylinder is blowing out air rather than a detonation under applied load?i hammer drilled holes in my cat because i thought it may have been plugged.compressions good reading 160+ no oil loss or burning but the fluttering sputer very much seems like the cylinder is blowing out air rather than a detonation under applied load?

Since you changed the sensor we will assume it is working. When you disconnect it you put the computer in limp mode which stops it from using sensor values. If code 300 is the only code we will assume the coolant temp sensor and others are ok. I would check fuel pressure with a gauge next.
I know you mentioned the EGR valve has been replaced, but you may have a bad 'new' part. I know the car is electronic, but has anyone checked its ignition timing (timing belt been looked at, I know it only has 77k on it). Is the fuel pressure regulator OK and it vacumm supply?

How long since overall tune-up? Any applicable trouble codes?
The basics for a rough idle, check for a leak of some kind, fuel--egr--vacuum, something of that nature. Does it run ok off-idle?
Hi there: DTC P0300 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
There are many issues that could cause this concern. Most common would be spark plugs and wires. A bad coil will also cause this issue. If this is the only code stored, it may be just that easy.
Other causes could be the engine is running lean, such as a vacuum leak in the intake. Also low fuel pressure or a injector that is dirty or going bad. A clogged catalytic converter may also cause a mis-fire condition.
A code P0300 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
Faulty spark plugs or wires
Faulty coil (pack)
Faulty oxygen sensor(s)
Faulty fuel injector(s)
Burned exhaust valve
Faulty catalytic converter(s)
Stuck/blocked EGR valve / passages
Faulty camshaft position sensor
Defective computer
Additionally, I would check all vacuum lines it is very common on this vehicle for there to be a vacuum leak, if none are found I would get the fuel injection system cleaned it is often the cause of a misfire. Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.
You should replace your Cap and rotor....Check for any vacuum leaks, When you replaced your plugs, were there any plugs contaminated with engine oil ? Some times manifold gasket goes bad...and causes vacuum leak...Hope this helps you alittle more ???
usually this code is followed by another number 1-4 or 1-6 or 1-8 depending on how many cylinders your vehicle has ,, what the code you got is a basic
P0300 Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected A code P0300 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
I would suggest spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor (if applicable). Otherwise, check the coils (a.k.a. coil packs). In some cases, the catalytic converter has gone bad. If you smell rotten eggs in the exhaust, your cat converter needs to be replaced. I've also heard in other cases the problems were faulty fuel injectors. Random misfires that jump around from one cylinder to another (read: P030x codes) also will set a P0300 code. The underlying cause is often a lean fuel condition, which may be due to a vacuum leak in the intake manifold or unmetered air getting past the airflow sensor, or an EGR valve that is stuck ope
They may not be firing. I would check spark from coils. You may have a bad coil pack. Do check for any vacuum lines. You can go to autzone.com and register for full free online repair manual
Misfires can be caused by worn or fouled spark plugs, a weak spark
(weak coil, bad spark plug wire), loss of compression, vacuum leaks,
anything that causes an unusually lean fuel mixture (lean misfire), an
EGR valve that is stuck open, dirty fuel injectors, low fuel pressure,
or even bad fuel.
A Random Misfire code usually indicates a vacuum leak or bad gas.
NOTE: If a misfire in a specific cylinder should lead you to check the spark plug, fuel injector and compression.
