You would put the distributor back in so that the rotor points to the same terminal on the cap the old distributor was pointing to.
If the shaft of the distributor has a notch, you can only put it in two ways with the rotor pointing to two terminals.
If you did not set the crankshaft to TDC before you removed the old dist, you have a 50 percent chance of being in the right position.
The notch on the bottom of the dist keeps you from picking any position other than the right one and the one 180 degrees off.

Any time you remove a distributor, your engine need to be in the number 1 firing position with distributor rotor pointing to the number 1 cylinder, if you install new distributor it has to go back 1 firing also this way you throw off firing order and ignition timing.

YOUR SPEDOMETER WORK WITH A SIGNAL FROM THE GEARBOX. I AM SURE THE AUTO PILOT DOESN'T WORK TOO. IT CAN BE LOOSE, CABLE BROKE OR THE INTERNAL COMPONENT FROM THE GEARBOX IS DAMAGED

1995 chevy caprice classic 4.3 v8 I have put new plugs, wires, coil, distributor cap, and all sensors on this car. When its cold it runs like a new one, when it gets hot it wants to skip. What could be wrong?

4.3 enginges have a notorious ploblem with the distributor failing exspecially when engine is warm. If this car has the optical distributor the optics inside fail.

Need to change the distributor on my Grand Cherokee but not sure even if the motor is a 4.0l or a 4.2l as the car does not have the original motor in it. How do i fnd which distributor i need. The old one...

Hi,
The easy way to get your new distributor in is to carefully mark and picture the one you have and remove it.
To do it this way
!- remove the distributor cap and set it aside.
2- mark on the ENGINE with a SHARP FLAT BLADED screw driver where the closest point to the ROTOR BUTTON IS.
Also best to take a picture of it as well.
Loosen the 10 mm bolt holding the distributor in but DO NOT REMOVE - turn the distributor in a twisting motion and pull up on it at the same time. Loosen it - then remove the bolt and then remove the distributor. Leaving the bolt in saves busted knuckles.
Take the old distributor to the parts house and replace.

The other way is to take down the VIN number and take that to the parts house and they will tell you which one you need from the Vin Number.

I recommend you replace the points - and cap while your doing this.

Hope this does it for you - if not just add to the question and we will guide you some more.

Engine stalls without warning

check engine light comes on after driving any given amount of time. Replaced egnition modual didn't work, replaced pcv valve, didn't work, replaced stater module, didn't work, replaced the fuel filter, didn't work. Took it in for diagnostics and was told that it is either the egnition module, computer, or the wires that are attached to the computer that go out to different parts in the engine.

Distributor

The distributor is on the back of the engine (that's the side that the transmission hooks up to). You will need a socket set and a paint marker (you might need a screw driver too). Remove the distributor cap (if the distributor cap is good you can leave the plug wires attached) carefully mark the rotor and the distributor so that you can easily see exactly how the two aligned while attached to the engine. trace an outline around the base of the distributor where it fits into the block so that when you remove the distributor you will be able to clearly see exactly how it sat on the engine. remove the bolts that secure the distributor to the engine. Give the distributor a light twist and pull hard directly away from the engine. Realign the rotor and distributor as they were aligned previously. Make note of relative position of the splines/forks on the back side of the distributor that fit into the engine. align your replacement distributor and rotor so that it matches the old one exactly. mark the correct alignment. Making sure that it is still aligned. insert the new distributor into the engine and lightly hand tighten the screws. Make sure that the screws are just tight enough to hold the distributor in place but loose enough to rotate it with ease. Make sure that the rotor is still properly aligned. make sure that the distributor is sitting against the engine block exactly how the old one was. Double check the rotor alignment and tighten the screws so that the distributor is snug but so that you can still rotate the distributor with some effort. double check the rotor alignment and put the cap back on. start the engine and give it some gas by manipulating the throttle body at the engine compartment. If the engine doesn't sound right, slowly and carefully rotate the distributor until it engine sounds like it should and tighten the bolts so that it can't be rotated any more. close the hood and go for a drive. you can adjust the timing by rotating the distributor if it still doesn't seem quite right. 0 Pts Rate Answer
