After trying to shift into 5th or reverse, the gear wont engage. The shifter becomes loose and flimsy and its hard to get back out again. There also seems to be more play in the shifter in gears 1-4 now.
Right under center console where shift lever connects to linkage rods there are bushings that join the two. In a neon there are also two rods. They move up left or down left or up right or down right in unison depending on which gear u need. A bad bush in on right side linkage will result in loss of 5th and reverse. In the up right and up left position. To access linkage push gear stuck down (towards ground) and rotate to left then pull off. Then remove center console to get look at linkage good luck btw new linkage bush in really cheap
SOURCE: i lost my third gear
It seems in the manual transmissions the first gear to go is 3rd gear..
signs of a failing trans
SOURCE: shifter is in neutral, but
ask a local mechanic to have a look ,no idea from this description it could be anything broke loose or whatever

Also the left hand side linkage will work 1st and 2nd i.e. Left up and left down. I actually used the rubber washer from a roofing nail to make it to town actually its still on the car three years later poor white guy saved $10 bucks
