I have a 2003 ford explorer when i shift it into reverse and drive it takes a few seconds for it to engage, it shifts fine once its going, until you stop then it takes a minute to shift into drive, but I have noticed if I keep the rpms up some it will not hesitiate going into drive, as bad I have had the transmission fluid checked, its ok.there is no check engine light on....what could this be, it does it hot or cold
SOURCE: 1994 explorer transmission problem
1994 Explorer has an A4LD trans. This trans shifts purely off of engine vacuum and the governor mounted onto the output shaft. The kickdown cable is just that....kickdown (passing gear) only.To properly check vacuum, you need a vacuum gauge.Disconnect the vacuum line at the modulator and connect the vacuum gauge.Engine vacuum at the modulator should be 17-20 inches at idle.Have a helper rap the gas pedal pretty hard.Vacuum on the gauge should drop to near zero, then back to 17-20 inches at idle. This is important,as this trans shifts off of engine idle.If you have inadequate vacuum, fix the vacuum leak. The only electronic controls inside this vehicle is lockup (TCC) and 4th gear is controlled by the PCM and actuated by a solenoid on the valvebody. The other 3 gears shift off engine vacuum and roadspeed (governor).Make sure the modulator you installed is indeed for an A4LD as a C3 modulator will fit,but leave you with late shifts.

Sometimes it may just be the fluid level, if you have drive , drive it around the block a few times, then park it on level ground and hold the brake and go through all the gears slowley, two times. put it in park, open the hood and check the fluid level, the dip stick in the back by the fire wall, take it out and clean it, read the stick. SOME need to be checked in Nutral, if this is the case do so but be carefull that the truck has stopped moving when put in nutral!!! if it is low only put in the right fluid, and a little at a time, while it is still running DO NOT OVER FILL !!!!!!!! Also sometimes it is a SENSOR problem, and in most cases not to hard or costly to replace.

If Drive Selector switch is properly aligned then a shift silonoid might be the problem.
SOURCE: my 1997 ford taurus transmission slips when it shifts to second
this is caused by a piston in the transmission that has a crack in it once it warms up the crack seals and operates normally.being cold the crack opens up allowing fluid to flow past it. take to trans shop as soon as you can, will be minimum repair if it has not caused further damage in the transmission.
SOURCE: 1998 ford explorer is having a transmission slip
Shift solenoid is typically WHEN to shift, not slipping.
Bands and fluid are slipping (and sometimes pump).
Cheap test, remove old, install new fluid... test.
If it works - congrats.
If not, AAMCO or other transmission place for a real test.

my observation is you will eventually be losing reverse on it and than drive if you keep driving it the way you are. hesitation can be a few things if you get them check asap before it gets worse module valve for the transmission if your transmission fluid does not look black or smell burnt. could also be a vacuum hose with a leak or that came loose, hesitated shifting is a sign of a new transmission needing to be done so do not be surprised.
