Last night when I turned on my car, I was having difficulty getting it started. I gave it some gas and it started. When I started backing out, I realized that my power steering was not working. I had no other way to get home and I didn't live that far from where I was, so I decided to drive it home. The car was also "overheating" with the gauge all the way in the red, although I didn't notice any smoke or smell coming from the engine. My battery light was on as well. Now, from what I have read online, this could possibly be the serpentine belt and/or the belt system itself. Am I correct in thinking this? It's the only thing that makes sense for these specific system failures all happening at the same time. If anyone could corroborate this for me, that would be great! Thanks.
SOURCE: over heating
That last time I saw a heating problem with it getting hot very quickly and then leveling off it was a bad thermostat. Also, if you have to add coolant every week, there is obviously a leak somewhere. Have you checked that car after a run to see if there are any drips anywhere?

your alternator is likely on its way out. you should take your car to a trusted mechanics shop and have the charging system tested. Its only a matter of time until the alternator stops charging and you'll be stranded on the side of the road
Hope this helps..........Good Luck!
SOURCE: need to install a serpentine belt for a 1995 Chevy Cavalier..how?
There is a Large Pulley above the Tensioners Small Pulley. This Larger Pulley has a Bolt in the Middle of it. Geta Socket and Wratchet and Tork this Bolt and it will Lower the Tensioner so that you can Reinstall it.

Mine did the same thing - not sure if yours is a 5.7 liter or not. Mine is, it's the LT1 engine and has the police package. Not sure if it's the same with the smaller engine, but if it is it could be something leaking over your distributor (water pump, coolant line, leaking oil getting sprayed upwards by the serpentine belt) which is an opti-spark. They are terrible and are labor-intensive to replace. It can be expensive and time-consuming unless you find someone who REALLY knows what they're doing - which isn't easy these days. Look up opti-spark, everyone hates it.

hi bob, take off the oil filler cap, have someone crank the engine while you look inside, if the rockers are not moving, it is a broken or slipped belt, if the rockers are moving try a compression test to see if the problem is limited to one cylinder or all of them....does the sound of the engine cranking seem faster than normal? is there any noise (clanking/banging) while cranking? marty good luck let me know!

I forgot to add that I haven't looked under the hood yet... I'm waiting for my dad, who is more mechanically inclined than me, to come over and take a look.
