You will have to inspect the speedo cable that goes from the back of the meter through the car's firewall and unto the transmission. There could be a break between the transmission and the firewall or at the back of the dashboard.
The speedometer in the dash operates off of an electrical signal that it receives from a sensor that is attached to the transmission. There is either a bad connection at the sensor or the sensor is bad. You should not need to disturb the dashboard.
