Question about 2002 Oldsmobile Alero
When I was leaving work about a week ago, I turned on the engine and put the car into reverse. about 5 feet later, the engine cut out and wouldn't start. got it towed to a garage and was told that the timing chain had jumped teeth and caused problems with the cylinders and valves. How common is this issue?
If in fact the timing chain did jump teeth on the gear, which is possible because of wear, especially in high mileage vehicles, It could cause damage to the pistons and valves, since the timing chain and timing gears, time those parts so they never touch each other. If the chain jumps teeth on the gear, then those parts would be out of timing, could or would touch each other and get damaged.

Not common unless the car has not been maintained. Without regular oil changes, the chain eventually stretches, the sprockets wear, and then the chain may jump a tooth. It is more common with overhead cams, because the chains are much longer and rely on tensioners that wear out.

be careful on this problem, this car has a problem on the pas-loc security system,go to www.carcomplaints.com type in 2001 alero wont start.i have this same year our daughter drives.please go and check this sight out .this is not a bad fuel pump. the sec.system is flawed.it thinks the car is being stolen so it is giving a false code which is causing the fuel pump to shut down.this is a problem that gm knew about,if you have a owners man.on this car, look up the pas loc system in it.they tell you how to override it.i hav been dealing with this for years snd may have a fix that will cost nothing..
