I just fixed a friend of mines 96 yukon...shift to neutral press 4H and u can hear the actuator make noise (we even replaced it with a new one his idea and the same thing happen as old one), so as he hit the switch for 4H i layed under it (on 4 jack stands) and I could hear the motor on the transfer case make a loud noise (well thats working) and before all this I asked him did u check all your fuses (he said guarnteed to be all good) one night it was bothering me so i looked through the owner manual for the yukon and in the fuse box on driver side by the door there are (2) fuse for the 4wheel drive unit, pull one of the fuses good...pulled the other one and it was blown put in a new fuse and it works like brand new..pull fuse for anything that has to do with 4 wheel drive componants,

Sam,
I would start with a transmission fliud and filter service.
I would then have the trasnmission checked out by a transmission shop. The transmission most of the time has the direct drum band is starting to go. The shops can rebuild it no problem, This is a very common failure wiith the trasnmission.
Good Luck

Well, just got back from the dealership, $762.00 later the problem is supposedly fixed. We'll see. They replaced the actuator ($550.00 part only) They also said by replacing this there is the potential to short out the brain box that controls the 4wd system. I have a 2005 Yukon and this problem first occurred around 38K miles last winter. When I took it in then since it was intermittent they could not identify exactly what it was. This time it had been inop for 3-4 days. I went to the dealer this morning and pulled in the service drive and shut the veh off, I could not get it in until 1pm so I left and ran some errands. Well low and behold when I started it to leave the service drive it was working. After making several stops it was on and off every other time I started it. Oh an by the way it is not covered by the 100k powetrain warranty since it is an "electrical problem." BS in my book. When I left the dealership I asked the service advisor if this one would be good for another 38k miles, he said Yes, well i should f-ing hope so. My 99' yukon had the same type 4wd system and it last more than 158k and never had an issue with the 4wd. I guess factory workers get 35 bucks an hour, for a job a trained monkey could do, but there parts are sh-t. No bail out for GM in my book, with this kind a **** the deserve to go bankrupt. As you can tell I am highly upset about it. In researching this I have found numerous complaints for the same issue and there are several TSB's from GM regarding the issue, but no recall, just bend over and take it.

I recently took my vehicle to a transmission shop and they had to rebuilt the transmission right through. I was recently told that the transmission is a common problem in these vehicles. Sad that GM can not fix or recall the transmisison since there is a problem.
