About a month ago, I noticed the temp gauge was hotter than normal and the heat in the truck was cooler than normal. I changed the thermostat and the fluid, everything seemed to be fine. 3 weeks later the same thing started all over again. Now I'm going to change the water pump. My problem is, I'm not sure where to start. Thanks

If it were a defective water pump, the increase in temperature would not go back down to "mid range (getting cooler)", so most likely it is not.
It is most likely a sticking thermostat as that is basically its purpose, to restrict the coolant flow and allow the engine to reach operating temperature thereafter grant free flow of the coolant. It would seem that there is considerable delay in its opening and therefore the temperature rises above the normal operating temperature.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

a bad heater core will just leak. it could leak alot. do you ever smell antifreeze? check the coolant level. it can get pretty low before it will overheat. the thermostat should be ok but there could be corrosion. when you had the water pump replaced was the cooling system flushed? 2001, its probably due for a flush. what coolant does it take? (green or orange)

Bad NEW thermostat? I had the same problem on my first generation Dakota. The problem for me turned out to be the DODGE thermostat I used to replace the old Dodge part. I went and got a Stant from local auto parts store using the standard temperature spec and quit shivering the next time I drove it. I hope that helps!

you could have a bad hose, check the upper and lower hoses and hake sure they are not caving in on themselves. sounds like it could either be that or you might have something cloging the hoses. run the engine with the hood open so you have the pressure build up, and look at both raditior hoses. see if they are bulging out as pressuer gets built, or if they cave in .

Fan Shroud does not come out, Radiator must be removed, don't forget the pressurized line at the bottom, oh and the cooked on bypass hose too, i'm frustrated where's my good old 460 where i could stand inside and work on it. With this Dodge, it seems engineered so that we can't do it ourself, so be it, another ford truck coming for me.
