Need replacement for dashboard light dimmer switch which is a thumbwheel (Honda SWITCH ASSY., ILLUMINATION NT 35150-SR3-A01ZB (dimmer switch). Dealer wants $115 and salvage yard doesn't have it. Tried online and still way too expensive for a simple variable resistor. What is the typical resistance so I can use a fixed resistor for full illumination (or a range) so I can splice it around the faulty switch? I have electronic tech skills. Pulled the switch description from the dealer and also from website at: http://hondamarketplace.com/showthread.php?t=2789805
Well if you have the skills you can do it.
measure the two extreme ends of the resistor only with the help of ohm meter if you do not find the value written which is usually mentioned like 10k ohms or 500 ohms like(ohms indicates like a horse shoe sign)
you take out the variable resistor from the dimmer circuit and can get from electronic spares supplier. if not the you find the middle pin that rotates on the carbon take a small piece of wire soldier to this middle pin and connect to check on either ends with the resistor out. at one end it should be glowing full while at the other end will not glow.
the resistor value should also be printed in the board if you need the value.
hope this solves your problem.

i am guessing that the ground is defective in the steering column, it will have to be taken apart to solve the problem. the air bag is the tricky thing to take care of so get the manual to have all the instructions and it will be helpfull for other repairs

Great detailed accurate and quick answer from Pervaiz Hussain. Same process I planned to do but great to see it in his response. Forgot I could just jumper the faulty variable resistor if I can't locate a replacement variable or fixed resistor. I have a solder station and the skills so it is easy to do the repair. Thanks.
