I live in California so have to do a Smog Check. I took it to a Smog Check center and they were unable to do the Check cause in order to do so the VSC Traction control has to be disabled but we ONLY could disable the VSC in 4wd mode and we needed to do it in 2wd mode.
All cars that have disable capable traction have special procedures in the owners manual. If you dont have your owners manual, anyone here will need exact make and model and year of vehicle plus the engine and transmission package you have to give you the correct procedure. Some vehicles (Most mercedes products for example) it cannot be disabled through normal means and the test should be conducted by the technician in idle mode only. The tech should be able to determine this from literature he is required to have onsite.
The smog center should know what to do, call the air resources board and ask for help getting it smogged. I am a former smog tech from calif and i know thios for sure.

Toyota is known for sensor problems (Especially tire pressure and traction control).
Suggest that you ask your local AutoZone to run a free ODB check on your car and define the specific sensor messages. That may get you in the right direction... or tell you that the chip that collects the data is smoke..... it can happen with excessive heat or voltage spikes.... Good Luck and keep us informed....
SOURCE: Can I (safely) disable my 1999 Range Rover 4.6 ABS
I have a 1998 Range Rover HSE. The ABS, TC amd Brake light stay on and now I have noticed that it is becoming harder and harder to stop. It literally feels like I dont have any brakes at all. I have to pretty much push the brake petal all the eay down in order to get it to stop. I had the pads and rotors about 6 months ago and I don't know what to do! Help please

Hi, these systems are all linked together. Most commonly, one of the wheel speed sensors is not reading or is reading incorrectly. This can also occur on slippery surfaces where one or more wheel slides enough to cause the sensor to drop the signal, but not enough to meet criteria for an abs or esp episode. If the light comes back every time you turn on the ignition, there is a deeper problem.
The system has detected a fault in the electronic stability program - brake assist system. You have an electrical connection at the rear wheels secured to the inside of the brake area and are viewable from under the vehicle. It is a small wire harness running to each wheel. Grab the connector and wiggle it around, and make sure they are tight. Due to the connector being mounted low to the ground, sometimes they become dirty or corroded, not making contact. Do this on both sides and see if the lights turn off.
If the light does not turn off, you have to replace dynamics sensor, which is mounted UNDERNEATH the center console in the car. There is a "lost communication to dynamics sensor" and "low voltage to dynamics sensor supply"..
