My 1999 turbo passat tachometer is going crazy I have barely and power going up hills, but is ifine at 55 or 60 in 5th gear on flat roads

Tachometer goes up to 4,000 - 5,000 wildly and I experience loss of power and have to shift and slow the car down to keep tachometer around 3,000. This happens going up hills. Can't go any faster than 30 mph. On flat roads it runs fine at 50 - 60 mph in 5th gear. Engine is running hot and there is a smell. No lights have come on dashboard.

Just like the windows and the moon roof you can get something called silicone spray. It works great ! My VW service man told me about it. I use it anytime I have trouble with these things :)

You have a bad coil pack, they usually crack from age and heat. It's best to replace them all. Check for a VW recall on this item.

In 2001 the "Check Engine" light might give information about what's going on with the transmission. You may want to have it checked by a shop before the transmission decides to die. It might be a simple fix.

Saab 900 turbo tacmeter? goes crazy up and down then car dies will start back up go for a bit does it again

On early vehicles the electronic tachometer was driven by a signal derived from the ignition primary circuit and so the readings had a direct relationship with the correct operation of the ignition system - if the reading is incorrect or fluctuating it would probably be because the ignition system is faulty.

Later vehicles with computer operated engine management systems the tachometer is likely to be driven by the engine management computer but the basic principle will remain the same and the tachometer will be providing a visual indication of what the computer is doing.

I suggest you have a specialist check the system with diagnostic equipment. I wouldn't be surprised to discover either the crankshaft or camshaft positional sensor or wiring is at the root of the trouble.
Good luck!

The gears on my car are not changing, could it be the transmision or the airflow meter?

automatic.?
first learn now to tell, if the engine lacks power ,or the tranny is slipping
that is easy.
1: increase speed, does RPM(tachometer) rise faster (independant) of road speed. (that is called, trans slip.)
2: the trans dont slip. so the engine rpms stay low (gears work) and
the engine has no power.
if the engine has no power, fix engine.

The trans is very complex. if it messes up post that and what it does
under all driving and gear selecton modes, and hills and flat ground.
why pick the air flow meter, MAF , the most expensive part of EFI sensors. why guess there is a very simple test for the MAF, just ask.
its all in the FSM or here.

Lights are going crazy like bad ground or computer on my 1985 vette

If you are are talking about the dashboard lights, there is a known problem that causes them to go "crazy" as you call it. There is a part known as the tachometer filter. This is a capacitor that filters the noise coming mainly from the ignition and that causes the dashboard display to go "crazy". If that is your problem, go to Ecklers store on web and search for the tachometer filter. It comes with instructions. This part goes next and connects to your distributor.
