Unfortunately, This Problem is Going to Be Either a Blown Head Gasket or a Cracked Block. Just in Case, Check all the Hoses and Check and see if your Model Has a Transmission Cooler Installed, Hopefully on of these is the Culprit. Please Rate My Response! Thanks!

I don't know if this is a long-term solution but I found it on another "how-to" website: on my 2001 E46 I removed the fuse (#50) for one minute. Something about the transistors inside the FSU (final stage unit, or blower resistor) resetting themselves with the constant power removed. I replaced it and drove home, which is a 1-hr drive, and the fan was on steady the whole time. Which it hasn't done in the 3 yrs I've owned it. I tested it at other speeds and it worked well. Don't know how long it will last though. If not, you need to replace the Blower Resistor - there about $75.
www.bimmerwerkz.com is an excellent source of info! They have pics, utube video, and diagrams to help you.

Hi can you give us more detail regarding the original clutch mark. Are you trying to replace the clutch plate?

There is most likely a valve, either mechanical or electromechanical, that sends coolant to the heater core. The valve is apparently stuck closed. Look for the valve between the water pump outlet and the heater hoses going into the cabin.
