Will a bad ecu cause my 1998 s70 volvo to NOT charge the battery?

Will a bad ecu cause this. Battery charges and runs fine but isn't keeping a charge. The Alternator has been tested and it is good. Battery will not discharge just sitting overnight or even for a week without driving. But when you do drive it and after a couple days of driving to school and back it goes into snow mode and when that happens I have to put in another battery fully charged, then alls well with the car.

THERE IS A SENSE CABLE CONNECTED TO THE ALTERNATOR, UNPLUG THIS CABLE AT THE CONNECTOR THEN START CAR, IF THIS DOES NOT HELP , IF THE CHARGE WARNING LIGHT COMES ON WITH THE IGNITION , BUT IS SLOW TO GO OUT WHEN THE ENGINE IS STARTED , THIS MAY INDICATE AN IMPENDING ALTERNATOR PROBLEM IF SO REFER TO AN AUTO/ ELECCTRICAL SPECIALIST.

SOURCE: 1990 240 dl Volvo wagon, have to put fully charged

sounds as though you have a bad alternator or a loose alternator belt and the battery is not being charged. while the car is running - check the voltage from the alternator and make sure it is about 13.4 volts DC.

Does an exact fit used ECU need to be reprogrammed on my 1998 s70 volvo

You can try a Hard Reboot, remove the battery cables from the battery, wait 20 minutes then make contact with the + an - cables together for at least 10 seconds. Normally you would want to run a diagnostic on the new computer if it cam out of another car just to erase the codes from the other car.

Dilemma, Battery died in my 1998 s70 volvo, charged the battery, then disconnected the neg. cable while car was running and engine died. Is this a bad alternator?

Scan it from the OBDII System to find out for sure or remove the Alternator and have it tested at your local Auto Parts Store.

Daughter called me ..car wont start. checked battery at Autozone...it is good. someone stopped to help them and bang on startere and it starts up. Bad starter. Starter replaced. Next day daughter...

it sounds like you have blown fuse to the Alternator.. I don't know what car you are talking about but they charging systems vary.. But if alternator isn't getting all the power it needs it won't charge. this should be checked.

good luck

The battery isn't charging some thing keeps killing the battery. The alt seems to be working but the battery want hold a charge for very long.

Have the battery load tested to determine it's ability to take & hold a charge. It could have a bad cell that will drain the good cells. Your local auto parts will test the battery free of charge.
I hope this helps.

I just buought a 98 Volvo S70 T5, the car sat for abit, to the point were It had to jump it. to start. ran great for the next 2 hours off and on mybe 7 diffrent starts but it never running for more then...

It could be a number of things:
  • Bad connection or corrosion on battery cables
  • Dead cell in the battery would prevent it from charging fully
  • Bad or worn drive belt would slip, preventing the alternator from fully charging the battery
  • Bad alternator
If the car will run at idle with all accessories turned on, the alternator is good and you should concentrate on the battery and battery cables. If the car won't idle, then the drive belt and/or alternator could be the issue. If the car starts everytime when it's cold and only gives you a problem starting when the engine is hot, the starter could be the issue. A bad starter will often work when it's cold (after sitting a few hours or overnight). When a bad starter gets hot, it takes more and more power to get it to turn over.
Overall, I'd have the electrical system checked out. Most chain auto parts stores (Autozone, Advance Auto) will do a complimentary electrical test for you.

Battery Light is On

The alternator is not charging the battery. Could be alternator, voltage regulator (which is usually in the alternator) , dirty/loose connections. First I would inspect all relevant electrical connections, clean & tighten. If no change -- replace alternator.

But be sure to fully charge the battery before you run the new alternator (follow alternator installation instructions).
