Temp gauge jumps to hot but engine does not appear to be running hot

Had faulty rad cap, replaced cap then temp gauge would jump up and down from around 210 to red line. Did not go up gradually but jumped. I replaced thermostat and Temp sensor but on the way home from work temp gauge went from 210 to red line..Engine did not appear to be running hot however.

SOURCE: How do I diagnose a bad thermostat or temperature

You can remove the thermostat and put in a pot of water and boil it.(should open near the stamped temp on yours, 195f) From what you have posted, ti seems that you have a partially obstructed radiator core and at present, it's just bad enough for the electric fan to deal with it. (you can actually see that the temperature fluctuations happen when the fan is on and off) If you do not clean out the radiator, eventually the fan will not be enough to lower the temp and it will begin to actually go into overheat.

Temp gauge and blazer jumps around when driving

Vehicle temperature gauges (temp gauge) read the temperature of the liquid in cooling system. From what I understand, the temp gauge jumping around has since gone away after you placed water into the radiator. It is very possible that water converted into steam was trapped in the cooling system and reached the temp sensor in your engine. The vehicle moving caused this steam to shift around reflecting rapid changes in temperature on the sensor, causing the needle to jump around on your console.
Hope this helps.

Have you checked your cooling fan to see if it is working propely? Let the car idle and get warm and listen for the fan to kick in (if they are electric) or just watch to see if the fan starts to spin faster if it is the old school type with a clutch. Have you replaced the thermostat? A bad one will let the temp rise since it opens too late and then the temp will drop off. But it won't due this only at a light and it will do it infrequently.

It may be the radiator cap itself, but is most likely a crack that has formed around of near the radiator, causing steam to exit from this area. It seems like it is a small leak, otherwise the coolant loss would not be so gradual. Radiator replacement will most likely solve this problem after the radiator is inspected and a crack is found. I do not recommend the use of Stop leak to correct leaking radiators, in the long run, they do more harm than good.

Hi my 2005 chevy express van shuts off after the temp gauge jumps up and down. its not over heating. its just the gauge is malfunctioning and shutting off the engine. how can i fix it.

I doubt it is the gauge. The most likely problem is the Temp sensor sending faulty signals tot eh ECU which is causing your gauge to jump and it activates your engine safety shutoff to stop engine fires and such. Check the wires for breaks and shorts and replace the temp sensor.

check cap make sure it's good, you probably have a leak somewhere and could be low on coolant, that's why it will go up and down on the temp gauge, have it pressure checked by a shop.

Sounds like a CPU problem. your radiator may need a good flushing a s well. i would also check the heater core for any unusual problems like seal break or leakage.
