97 jeep TJ that is starting to have issues going into reverse, sometimes it will but other times I have to turn engine off, out in reverse then start engine back again. clutch has no slip and still has 1 1/2 free travel at top so dont think clutch is issue.
Hi, i have tj 1999 was fine but yesterday i put in reverse star go back at stop when no reason at no let me go back just stop
Take it to a good transmission shop that you trust to be honest. The clutch is probably not stopping the input shaft spinning enough to enter reverse. Here is my test: Put the transmission in neutral with the engine running and let out the clutch. Press the clutch all the way to the floor (important) and after a few seconds put it in 1st gear. Did it go in without any hesitation? If it hesitates then the clutch is not stopping the input shaft spinning in a reasonable time, but the syncronizer is stopping it. Continue testing each gear, neutral to a gear, until you get to reverse. If reverse scratches or moves the car some when you enter it then the clutch is not working properly. The key to this is a good honest transmission shop who will only replace the clutch and not the transmission and then tell you it needs a clutch also while he's in there.
Your syncronizer is going out on the reverse you need to have it looked at soon
