We have a old 1994 chrysler new yorker and the hood release broke, so we had to manually pull the latch by hand (by reaching under the hood) The latch was easy to find; however, simply pulling this latch was good for naught! This did absolutely nothing! No work today:( Really hope this car lasts for another month! Any ideas?

Is there any part of the cable inside the cabin that you can pull with a pair of pliers? I suggest that you try that. You may need to disassemble it from the pull handle to make that work.

SOURCE: hood latch cable fails to release hood when

I would try pushing down and pulling up on the hood while someone operates the hood latch. I'd try to spray some WD-40 between the hood and grill area. From underneath, you may be able to use a long screw driver to try to move the release lever over to release the hood.

Hood wont open

It may be that your hood release cable that runs from the hood release is broken. You'r going to have to try and manually release the hood latch by tripping the release through the grill with something like a long screwdriver. You should be able to identify the latch trigger by following the cable to end.
You might also try having push down on the hood while another person tries to trip the latch if the cable isn't broken, but just stuck.

I have a 99 a6 quattro and the hood won't open. I believe the problem is from the main release disconnecting from the latch under the hood. there is no tension on the lever and I already tried to...

This is a tough one, you will need to try and get a hold of a part of the cable going to latch and pull the complete cable with the housing and try to get hood open, another way is to locate the latch from under the car, you may need a skinny screwdriver that very long and try to push the latches release arm. this is going to be hard to do but is the only way i ever get hoods open with broken cables, hope this helps.

Broken hood release cable how to open hood

you can often release the hood latch from under the car, or through the grille, by reaching up to the hood latch mechanism with a long screwdriver or pliers, or a piece of coat hanger, whichever works in your particular case. G/L

How do you get the hood open if the hood latch wont open

You will need to reach under the top of your hood to see if you can locate the release cable. There should be one on either side of the hood. If you can reach the cable and manage to get one side or the other released, a repetitive bouncing up & down motion on the hood should cause the other side to release.

Alternatively, if you find that the cable has broken inside under the dash, you cat tru to expose the end of the inner cable in order to be able to grasp onto the cable with a pair of vice grips or other form of plyers. Pulling on the inner cable should release the hood latches.

Very close quarters, and tight tolerances.

can you reach the cable itself?,or is it broke at the hood latch?IF its not broken at the outside latch, try to follow the cable,un-hook it from the handle and pull on the wire cable to open it.IF its broken at the latch itself, you are going to have to reach the latch through the grille and try to pull the lever the cable connects to.That part is no fun at all..!!

My hood latch is broken on my 2001 Subaru Outback. How do I manually opent the hood? I think my problem is the same. I have a 1997 Legacy--when I pop the hood, it releases, but I can't located the latch...

If the cable link to the latch is rusty or broken you have to take the front grid down. It's relatively easy. It's held there by plastic fasteners. Then reach for the latch with you hand, or the leftover broken cable. Pull it, it should release the first latch, than you just have to get to the security latch, like you usually do to open the hood.
