Where is the ecm on a 94 buick park avenue and what does it look like????
All 94 & 95 Buicks ECM units are G.M. DELCO Part # 16183247. There are NO-NEW Ones available, even from a Dealer. There are SO-CALLED "REBUILT" ones and also ECM's from wrecking yards. The Dealer will hit you for over $l,200.00, parts & labor if your lucky. A SO-CALLED "REBUILT" one is around $275.00 to $350.00 Plus a core charge of $70.00 to $150.00. And you do all the labor. If it were my Buick that needed a ECM replaced, I would call 6 to 10 wrecking yards near my area and locate a G.M. DELCO ECM Part # 16183247 ONLY!!! AND-NO-OTHER-NUMBER!
Don't let them tell you they have a substitute that works!
Tell them your looking for the best price out the door ECM or as they call it "The BRAIN BOX" for your 1994 Buick 3.8 engine DELCO part# 16183247 ONLY!!! The same ECM's are in Buicks, Olds, Pontiac & some Comeros. Don't let them add a core charge to there price. Keep your old unit you will need it later. They run about $90.00 to 140.00 out the door plus tax. Remember don't buy anything but a DELCO part# 16183247!!!!!
***NOW to answer your first Question: Where is the ECM in a 94 Buick, Located and what does it look like and how to replace it???
The ECM in a 94 Buick is Located behind the glove box, high on the upper section of the foot panel. Before you start removing the EMC, Disconect the (NEG - ) cable off the battery!!! To remove the ECM, you must remove 8 screws & 4 wing-nuts from the lower dash board kick panel. Then, remove 5 screws & a rubber strap from the lower base of the glove box. Pull glove box down & remove glove box light & holder. Let box drop down on the carpet floor.
Next, look under dash for a silver flat metal box high up on the back section of the foot panel wall with 3 wire plugs going to it. DO-NOT- PULL-THE-PLUGS-OFF-YET!!! 3 separate wire looms go the plugs.
One - RED, One WHITE & One BLUE. If you can see that unit... You have found the ECM!!
NOW, HOW TO REMOVE IT... The ECM is mounted on a thick white or sometimes yellow back board. Use a blade screw driver to push on the lower corners of that board while pushing up on the ECM with you hand. Keep doing it until the corner plastic clips snap out.
Then push ECM up and pull down on the center lip-tab of the back board to free the ECM. Once, the unit is free, pull down and let the ECM drop down to the carpet floor. Now, get some masking tape & mark each wire loom RED, WHITE & BLUE to mach the ECM plugs. After you have marked the looms, ****DO-NOT-PULL-ON-THE-WIRES!!!**** Be very careful, SQUEEZ THE WIRE PLUGS UPPER SIDES & PULL UP & OFF!
DO-NOT PULL ON THE WIRES!!!! NOW THE OLD ECM UNIT IS OUT!
The next step is very IMPORTANT... Take both units into your dining room table. Make sure there are NO carpets on the floor near you and the table. Unscrew 2 - 1/4" screws holding a medal shield on top of both EMC's. Remove the shields from both units. Inside you will see a BLUE EPROM CHIP IN BOTH ECM's. IT's about 3" long & BLUE, very carefully push & lift the tabs on each end of the EPROM and lift up to remove it.
PUT YOUR OLD EPROM INTO THE NEW ECM. * DO-NOT-TOUCH-THE-CONTACTS-OF-THE-EPROM-OR-THE-CONTACTS-IN-THE-NEW-ECM!!!
Replace the shield to pertect the EPROM & the Mother Board in the ECM.
GO back to the car and carefully put the marked wire pluge back on the proper RED - WHITE & BLUE color plugs. They only go back one way... Make sure you feel the clips snap into place & lock. Once you reach that point, Leave the ECM lay on the passengercarpet floor for now.
NOW, put the (NEG - ) Cable back on the battery tight. Get in the car turn the key on... BUT-DO-NOT-START- ENGINE!!! Look to see if the dash board lights and gages are working. IF-YES...START the car and let it run for about 15 minutes, it may run a little raugh at first, thats OK because, the new ECM is RE-LEARNING to program itself from your cars sensors sending it information and it also will learn your driving style and speeds driven on streets and Freeways. Take it for a test drive slow and easy at first, then bit by bit faster and faster. Do this for about 5 to 7 days or at least 200 miles before it Learns everything about you and the car. THEN, it will reset itself... YOU DON'T need a DEALER or ANYONE to RESET or REPROGRAM YOU BUICK EVER!!!! GOOD LUCK!!!
