Jeep grand Cherokee transmission tail shaft

The transmission tail shaft is making this clicking noise while I have the rear end on jack stands and turning the drive shaft manually. Any thoughts?

its not the rear end it is definitely coming from the transmission TAILSHAFT not up by the bell housing but right where the drive shaft connects to the ******

Is that joint right there a U-joint or CV? Anywho check for play at that joint, There may be a little at the slip yoke, where the tailshaft comes out of the transfer-case , but nowhere else should have any. If those joints are loose: replace U-joint While your under there you might as well check the front drive-shaft also.

Noise from rear-end on jeep chrokee

Hey Dennis,
Have you checked the lube level in the read differential? If its good, you have a wheel bearing going bad. To replace it, you will need to remove the axle.. This is not a hard fix, but you have to have the ALL the tools and you MUST put the rear end up on jack stands..DO NOT use a jack to hold the rear end up.. IF you are not very mechanically inclined, please take this to a qualified professional..

The rear end sounds like the bearing is going bad? like a tire with a bad cord.

jack up and remove wheels please use jack stands , rotate each wheel slowly and listen for noise at hubs or differential, maybe just an hub bearing, if axle bearing look for wet backing plate or grease around brakes . if axle bearing you have to get chiltons or haynes Manuel for truck and follow instructions

Jacking points on all Jeep vehicles

c17hydro_1.gif

Your Jeep was supplied with a jack for emergency road repairs. This jack is fine for changing a flat tire or other short-term procedures not requiring you to go beneath the vehicle. Do not attempt to use the jack on any portions of the vehicle other than specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Always block the diagonally opposite wheel when using a jack.

Placing a floor jack under the front frame rail

Placing a floor jack under the rear frame rail at the leaf spring shackle. It may be necessary to place a block of wood between the frame rail and the jack

Supporting the front of the vehicle with jack stands placed under each frame rail

A more convenient way of jacking is the use of a garage or floor jack. You may use the floor jack at the specified points in following the illustrations.

Never place the jack under the radiator, engine or transmission components. Severe and expensive damage will result when the jack is raised. Additionally, never jack under the floorpan or bodywork; the metal will deform

I am getting a metallic "clicking" noise from the front end of a 2003 jeep grand cherokee. The noise is most audible at low speeds (10-15 mph) The tempo of the noise does not seem to increase/decrease with...

I can't say for sure without actually checking myselft but it sounds like one of four possiblilities, ball joints, tie rod ends or sabilizer bar ends or shocks.
To check the tie rod ends put the jeep on jack stands or a hoist, with the steering wheel locked try to turn the wheels back and forth and look for movement in the joints of the linkages.
To check the ball joints, while the jeep is up in the air grasp the top and bottom of the wheel and try tipping the wheel in and out, checking for movement in the ball joints.
Lower the Jeep back to the ground. Continue the tests by having a big friend or family member bounce the Jeep while you listen for and look for movement in the ball joints, stabilizer bar ends and along the linkage and abnormal movement in the shocks.

2001 grand cherokee laredo makes whirring noise when in overdrive,as soon as we take it out of overdrive the noise stops. Changed front half shafts and bearings, but the noise is still there.

The rear ends on this make an model are a weak point.
Overdrive and Reverse are usually the first gears to show symptoms when the transmission is going bad.. You should seek the advice of a mechanic.

4x4 light and knocking noise after driving

If you hear the noise after the engine is turned off that noise is most likely the exhaust system cooling down. As far as the light for the 4 wheel drive that requires a test be run with a special scan tool while the problem is occurring.
