i just bought a used 97 CHEROKEE but i had the same problem, when i got to looking at it i found out the front driveshaft was shot, look at that, if its not it i would say its probably the transfer case especially with an older vehicle like that which is a very expenxive repair

SOURCE: 91 Jeep Wrangler Sahara, 2WD won't engage, 4WD is fine!

check to see if front drive shaft is locked in by spinning it by hand, if it is there is a sensor on top of the tranfer case that has the vac lines connected to it. On the bottom of the sensor there is a ball. If the ball gets stuck open the vac stays on and the front end stays engaged no matter if your in 2 or 4. The sensor is like 22 dollars from chrysler.

Jeep will not go back int 2-w drive

my guess... is car is 4wd not AWD, like my wrangler
and non go back to 2wd from 4wd if car is sitting on dry pavement.
you never stated road conditions ,so i guess at dry road and not offroad.
Partime 4wd is only for ICE or offroad, if you read the lost operators guide it tell you that.
the solution (TSB subject) is to drive to dirt and switch to 2wd.
if no dirt, jog car in a straight line, and try , forward the back the try.
or jackup one wheel. and try.
its locked in to 4wd due to WINDUP, (bad driving)

2003 jeep wrangler 4x4 auto...transmission is not engaging at all, i.e.not in park, drive, reverse, 2wd, 4hi or 4low...how do I fix it?

Did you check your ATF level? I have an ATF leak somewhere and when my ATF gets really low my auto trans will keep slipping out of gear until I dump another quart or two of ATF fluid into the trans.

1998 Jeep Wrangler - Looking for proper way to put into 4 wheel drive and take back out to 2 wheel drive. Unsure if vehicle is suppose to be reversed after engaging or unengaging.

Best way to attain engagement without any grinding etc. is to pull 4x4 lever into gear while rolling at low speed. You can also in an emergency, turn the engine off and engage, then re-start (when you have been in 2wd and have gotten stuck in mud and can't roll) When dis-engaging, generally it will shift out with no problem while moving, but if it does not, then you can back up about twenty feet and usually that will work. (still beats getting out and doing it manually at the hubs!!)

Just bought my son a 93 jeep grand cherokee cant get it to run in 2wd we have 4wd all time & 4wd low on the shift.when we put in nutral & put the auto in drive the wheels dont spin dont have a...

Neutral is only used when you need to tow the jeep. Normal two wheel driving is done in 2h. To engage 4wheel drive keep rolling slowly and engage either 4h or 4L. Generally 4L is almost never used as it is for pulling weight like a vehicle stuck in a snowbank. If it does not return to 2h when you go back into two wheel operation, many times it will if you back up about ten or twenty feet. Don't engage 4 wheel drive while standing still. and never force the lever if you hear grinding.

Jeep grand Cherokee stuck in 4 wheel drive.

Hello nicky...Check the transfer case linkage and see if it is working freely....the linkage could be hung between 2wd and 4wd. You may be able to keep working the linkage and free it up...the bushings may be worn and the linkage may need adjustment also. The transmission mounts will wear and keep it from moving freely. Try driving in reverse for a block or so...a lot of the wrangler and cherokee owners claim this works for them.
Good luck...i hope this helps, please rate me a fixya.

4 wheel drive doesnt work.

Has this Jeep been modified at all?
It sounds like the shifter cable was reinstalled backwards.
Specifically the 4-Low "Not Climbing Well". 4-Low should give you the best torque and hill climbing ability.
Do you feel any "Binding" in the steering wheel (difficult to turn)?
Remember a Jeep uses real driveshafts and differentials to give you 4WD - you cannot engage 4WD or 4-Low on dry hard surfaces. It needs a little bit of slip between the wheels for turns.
Check you're fluids too.

91 Jeep Wrangler Sahara, 2WD won't engage, 4WD is fine!

It sounds like your driveline to the rear wheels is broken. Could be transfer case output shaft to the rear wheels has broken. Try disconnecting the rear drive shaft and see if you can turn it by hand with the transfer case engaged in 2WD. If you can turn it while the Sahara is in gear, the output shaft is no longer connected to the engine for some reason.
