High pitched whine for about 45 seconds on cold start. Is it starter motor or air pump?

Only happens on cold start after car has been off for at least 4 to 5 hours. As soon as the engine starts there is a high pitched whine, sounding almost like a circular saw. It lasts for about 45 seconds. Interestingly if you turn the key off immediately after turning it on and do a restart it won't happen.

SOURCE: Sometimes it turns over and starts right up and

Sounds like a fault in the ignition switch, or ( if the car is auto) the lock out on the shifter.
First try wiggling the shifter . Else.
Providing that the ignition lights are coming on.
Wait for the fault to appear then hot wire the starter .
Take a wire from the small terminal on the starter to a positive power feed.
If the car starts, check starter relays, fuses, connections ( under footwell on the right side RHD cars) , make sure the connections are good on the starter. If all these things OK, then the actual ignition switch is most likely faulty.

SOURCE: PORSCHE 944 Starting issue:

Your car has a clutch switch if it's a standard and a park neutral switch if it's a automatic. The automatic it's in the console with a rod connected to the shifter, Knock the shifter to the side too hard, ( jump in the car and push the shifter sideways) and the rod can pop out. With the cover off just pop it back in. On the standard shift the switch is on the clutch pedal and you can break the wire or the plug or the switch it's self with your big feet. The carpet can bulg up under the pedal not letting you pust it down all the way. It in doubt about either switch there's just the two wires cross them and it'll start no matter ( just be careful as the reson for the switch is to keep you out of a wreak) Lets say your still out to passture and the switch is good Turn to start and the test light lights at both sides of the switch the wire at the starter ( the one small wire) comes hot in the startt position and you add power at this wire and theirs still no reaction, with this wire hot ( jumper wire , someone holding the key to start) rap on the starter with a hammer, I didn't say nail it) still no good and the big wire from the battery is hot ( battery cable going to the starter is clean and good, then the starter is bad. Have the parts store test it before you buy the new one as if it's good you missed somewher in the story I just told. 10 volts or more at the starter with the key heald at start and it'll start if it's going to/

High Pitched Whine

A high pitched whine like that indicates a bad bearing. Water pump, power steering pump, accessory belt slipping, alternator bearing, or in the worst case scenerio, Transmission pump.

The most common cause would be a defective power steering pump.

Check your power steering fluid level. If too low the pump will whine like that. Put some in it if low. Don't buy power steering fluid, automatic transmission fluid is the same thing and is much cheaper.

The basics, your battery is used to provide power to the starter. Once the engine is running the alternator then provides current to recharge the battery and run all of your electrical components. so I would suspect the starter is not working to start the engine.

High Pitch whine during acceleration

Hi Pullerwife,

I have a few suggestions for you,

First of all, check your air filter, make sure its clean, not clogged, and doesn't need to be changed.

I don't know how handy you are, but if you are fairly handy, check the idler pulley bearings, if your not, have a shop check it out, as a last resort.

Power steering pump/fluid being low is also a possibility, but thats usually more of a lower pitched whine then what you describe.

You say once the vehicle is warmed up, the whining stops. Does Weather seem to be a factor as well?

Hope I've helped, and don't forget to rate.
