The fuel gauge is reading successfully but only for a split second, then it goes to empty. I filled the tank (a little to full) and the gauge read past full, suddenly the fuel gauge drops to empty and I get the warning ding. I have heard that it may be a floater, but I am leaning towards an electrical issue possibly. So if it was to be electrical, what would I most likely need to replace?
9 times out of 10 the fuel pump/level sender assembly is the cause. Sometimes the gauge pod is faulty, and there have been cases where there were either poor connector pin fit issues and/or chaffed/melted/cut wires in the harness that leads back to the fuel pump. It is an extremely common fault and would be surprised if the pump/level sender assembly wasn't the cause.
I hope this info helps!

Youre gauge is controlled by a plunger in the fuel tank which is attached to the sensor and the fuel gauge. it sounds like when the plunger goes down half way its either getting stuck down lower then it should. Needs replacing. Any mechanic can do this install for you.

You have a bad ground, you will have to remove the fuel tank and check the connectons on top of the tank, probably corroded. You can clean the terminals or change them.
