I have a 02 dodge intrepid and it was getting stuck in 2nd gear. This is called "limp mode", designed to get you off the road . I had to replace the transmission control solonoid, and at the same time, had the tranny serviced. the tech also found a broken spring in the valve body. total cost was $600.

does not seem to effect the performance of the car, no light is coming on, could be the transmission, but car seems to be shifting fine. The hum continues while the car is driving at 50-65 miles per hour until we slow down. We r taking a trip to Colorado and fear that mountain driving may be a problem.
