Coming off the engine block on the passengers side underneath the distributor is a hose that looks to be 2-1/2 to 3 inches in diameter. A small hole in it now allows antifreeze to spew everywhere. I'm unable to see or feel where the other end of the hose leads to but it turns 90 degrees 3 to 4 inches off the engine block and goes toward the firewall but not to it.
I've replaced several radiator and heater hoses over the years but I've never worked on a frontwheel drive engine with so little room to work in. Will the distributor have to be removed to get to this hose? And if so, will specialized equipment be needed to put it all back together?
Thanks for your help,
Kavin from San Angelo
If the hose is 2 to 3 inches in diameter then it's one of two primary hoses from the radiator. There should be two that come off the radiator and go onto the engine block. The top one has the thermostat mounted on the engine and leads into the hose. I'm guessing you can't see where the hose goes because it is the return hose from the bottom of the radiator. See if you can get underneath the car to see where it's going. Most likely it's just a simple clamp and you can replace the hose yourself. No special toos are required, just time and a lot of fluid dripping when you take the hose off :-)

First, make sure your coolant level is full. After spending some time looking around you probably have a shut off valve in the engine compartment. See if you can locate 2 black(sometimes red) heater hoses, about 1 1/4 inches in diameter, coming from the firewall on the passenger side. The heater control valve is located inline with the hoses. It turns on and off the flow of hot water through the heater core which radiates heat in your passenger compartment. Check with your parts house to verify this by looking up the control valve.
With the location of the water leak and the cold air, it sounds as if the heater core is leaking or one of the heater hoses going to or from the core has a hole in it. The heater core is on the passenger side of the vehicle, inside, against the firewall. Is the carpet wet underneath on that side?
is it actually on the engine? I ask because you say it is to the passenger side and just behind the engine, that makes me think it is a heater hose, the heater hoses go from the water pump to the heater core which is located on the passenger side, the difference between heater hoses and radiator hoses is the size and of course location, heater hoses are generally about 1/2 inch to 1 inch, with radiator hoses being between 1 3/4 and 3 inches
it is the heater water supply and return, that supply water to the heater core to supply heat using hot water from the engine, the hose clamp my be loose or the hose has a hole in it you have to trace it from unner the hood fire wall to where it connects to the heater under the dash
There is a rubber drain hose that should be attached to the bottom of the cooling/ blower unit on the passenger side of the car underneath the dash. This hose drains the condensation from the cooling unit. the hose may have gotten disconnected or it may be clogged up. I have had cases where a dirt dobber built a nest up inside the hose and clogged it up. Check this hose it may be the cause of the water puddling up in your car.
A/C is not draining condensate. Ck the drain under the blower housing on passenger side. Squeeze like a coin purse to open it. It's like a rubber duckbill.
