My 1999 Rav4 engine stalls when overdrive button turned on. Only way to drive is with O/D off.

As i said , car will drive as long as O/D is not engaged. meaning only using its low gears. Once O/D is turned on, after a sec or to engine just starts to sputter and die.

The engine and the automatic transmission in this vehicle are computer controlled and in most cases when a fault occurs a fault code is stored in the memory of the computer control module. There are exception to this, such as the Mass Airflow Meter and fuel pressure problems. What must be done is to have all the basic testing done such as a scan of the system for fault codes as well as a check with a live data scanner tool for engine functions that are not within range of normal, a trained technician is required to know what is correct and what isn't, then based on careful diagnostics done from a factory repair manual the correct part is replaced or the wiring repaired or the computer replaced (known as the PCM), which is very rarely the problem. Other basic checks must be done as well such as mechanical problems with the engine as well as engine state of tune and mileage on the engine. The transmission can have mechanical issues as well such as no gear engagement at all or a failed pump or other pressure related problems.

SOURCE: rav4 gear problem

You need a new 5th gear- luckily this is easy to replace- I did it myself following online directions for 5th gear replacement. The 5th gear is not in the box with the other gears- its off to the side so you can access it very easily by removing the left front wheel. Just don't let the idler assembly come apart, lots of tiny parts and springs...
The 5th gear can ware out prematurely if you rest your hand on the shifter- do not rest your hand on the shifter in the future.

SOURCE: 1994 toyota paseo: overdrive problem

I would start with replacing your tranny fluid. black is no good. your tranny should hold about 7 qts of fluid. The tranny fluid runs through your radiator to help keep it cool. If your thermostat is stuck closed your eng coolant won't circulate and the coolant will get hotter inside your radiator. thus making your tranny fluid hotter and breaking it down. After time it will turn black from getting too hot. Let your car warm up to normal operating temperture then grab your upper radiator hose. It should be very warm. If not your thermostat is stuck closed.

Why does my jeep turn off if I don't toggle the overdrive switch enough?

it stalls with foot in the throttle...... really.? try to say what you and car are doing at the od switch flips.. sure moving fast.
but doing what, up hill down, flat, acceleration, decel, or coasting?

ok, this can be real easy.
engine tuned up is 99%
ever heard of scan tool.
connect it, and log data (or person 2 watches) and log DTC and streaming data?
if the Magic relay called ASD drops the the engine stalls (this is its purpose) and if it did the SCAN TOOL tells you why it did.
every time...
asd class 101.:
http://www.fixkick.com/Jeeps/ASD.html

is transmission stuck in 3rd gear, limphome.??
the trans mission will not stall a car. 99%
that is because the clutch has a stall speed.
and slips greatly at idle, say 800rpm is hot idle , so if say the trans solid locked into top gear. and you came NEAR a stop sign, coasting... and braking.. say.....
and as rpm dropped, the clutch will slip and no trans ever stalls the engine.99% unless the engine is super weak and misfiring hard.
or ASD DROPs !
that is why we scan to see ALL ERRORS> engine and trans.
see?

Rav4 wont start but cranking and no engine an overdrive light

Does this engine have fuel? Does it have spark? Is it getting air? These are the questions you need to answer. First thing you should check for is spark due to it being the easiest to diagnose. Hope this helps. Btw air is almost never the issue. So check for fuel next

1999 ford f150 stalls when put in drive

Any flashing lights on the overdrive button. Sounds like a messed up torque converter or a computer command to stay locked up randomly. It's just a clutch that uses fluid, but most now have a electrical controlled magnetic clutch to lock them up. If they are told (wrongly by the computer) they won't let go and will stall the motor, cause harsh shifts, etc. Diesels just won't stop with the power they make. Scan for codes.

My toyota rav 4 engine stalls sometime when driving after the engine light switches on. I then need to turn the ignition a couple of times for it to start. Any help?

From little info given, I suspect it is overdue a service or it has been done by a non Toyota garage, it needs a laptop to tell it that a service has been done, to get you going, switch it off, open door, close it, and then re-start

MANU button on RAV4

The PWR button (power) is like a sports mode. It keeps in lower gears for longer so you can gain more speed. Handy for overtaking or fast lane changing. Not wise to use this all the time due to poor fuel economy.

The MANU button (manual) allows you to operate the gears manually. With MANU on and gear lever in L, it will drive in 1st. Gear lever in 2, it will drive in 2nd. Gear lever in D, it will drive in 3rd. If Overdrive is enabled then D will give you 4th gear instead.

I have a 1999 jeep cherokee that has intermitant transmission problems 1)shifting up it wind out to 2k-3k before shifting 2) at higher speed it feels as if it slips out of overdrive rpm increase but speed...

It will shift out of overdrive upon increasing throttle , pulling hills and so on. Your overdrive probably kicks in around 35 to 45mph and kicks back out as you increase throttle. Electrically controled speed sensor to control the response. Overwise the engine would bog down to a stall. Over drive is just that. It changes the gearing ratio to over drive meaning less then final gear 4 to 1 down to 4 to 3 etc more direct drive ratio to lessen consumtion of fuel with less stress on engine. Have shift speed sensor adjusted. Don't drive in overdrive in city if most driving is under 45mph

Driving with/without O/D

drive with it engaged.your engine will work less on the highway and give you better gas mileage.the switch is there for towing or when you need that extra pulling power because it stays in third gear.
