I have a 1997 4-wheel drive toyota tacoma. It has a 2.7 ltr. 4 cylinder A34OF auto transmission. I had the transmission fluid changed and we are unsure as to the correct amount to put back. The owners' manual calls for 2.1 qts. Is this correct? It seems like an awfully small amount. I have called the dealership and the mechanic there said he wouldn't leave the parking lot with less than 4 qts. My name is Jeff and I need help.

You put ion the amount to bring back to the correct level on the dip stick
unless you have completely drained the transmission AND the torque converter then the amount required is around 1/2 the capacity stated in the book
so start with the 2.1 quarts monitoring the dip stick until you get it on the mark then follow the instructions in the user manual as to starting /running in gear at idle and topping it off as required

Yes... Disconnect the battery, put the key in and turn it to unlock the wheel, put the gear shift in neutral. Away you go.

1998 toyota tacoma slips out of gear

Check the shifter cable at the transmission side and see tf the pivot on the transmission is not rusted and is not difficult to move, take your vehicle and shift to neutral, now turn it off, put on parking brake or block wheels so you don't run yourself over now you can feel the shift link on the transmission, lube it up as it may not be going in fully and causing to slip out, good luck..

Is doing a transmission flush the same as changing the differntial fluid?

No, a transmission flush replaces the fluid in your transmission. A diff. service would replace the fluid in the rear end also the transfer case and front diff. if you have a 4 wheel drive truck.

1997 toyota tacoma will not go into 4 wheel drive

Has the transfer case ever been serviced? The fluid should be changed every 30,000 miles, if not the works can stick and cause engagement problems. Make sure the vacuum to the front hubs is available, if the front hubs are not locking the front drive shaft will turn but no Front wheel lock up and no 4 wheel drive is available.
