My car overheated shut off on me and now it wont stay running unless my foot is on the gas

My car overheated and would not turn back on until the next morning i poured water in it and it started coming out the tail pipe but it would start just as soon as i take my foot off the gas it turns off.

Sounds like a cracked head. Or possibly a bad head gasket.
Either one of these would explain water coming out of tailpipe.

so if i did crack my head does that mean i need to replace the engine

I ended up driving to spokane acura and having the ignition switch replaced.

Hi i remember it was a TL recall about this problem, you should go to acura they used to exchange some parts in ignition module

try cleaning the throtal plate with carb cleaner.

a recall re:ignition switch have an Acura dealer run your vin number to check against any recalls to verify.

sounds like a bad throttle solenoid. when you shut off the car, the solenoid allows the throttle to close completely to keep the engine from dieseling when shut down.

My 05 Cadillac STS 4.6L wont stay running unless foot is on the gas...

Check the IAC (idle air control) motor, the TPS (throttle position sensor) and the EGR valve - any one of these can cause the problem, but I would carefully check the IAC first (they often stick or fail due to heavy buildup on the plunger and/or a plugged air gallery).

This could be a lot of things. IT could be the injectors or the fuel pump pressure, it could be the air intake, vacuum leak, etc.

Check TPS -Throttle Position Sensor

May be worn out

Test it --not replace-- unless it has failed a test

Also the fuel pump maybe worn out as well

The idle relearn needs reset. Keep your foot on the gas at about 900 rpm. Make it idle for about 5-6 minutes. Slowly ease up on the gas until it will idle on it's own, it might take a while. After you get it to idle, it might be idling real low, but on its own, Let it sit and idle until for 20 minutes. After that it should be back to normal. You will have to do this every time you have the battery unhooked for a while.

1983 Mercury Marquis wont stay started

this problem is caused by carbon holding the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve open, it is a very comon complaint, fixed 100's for the issue at my dealer. You can buy a EGR valve carbon trap from the dealer to stop the problem.

Withoutknowing if the check engine light is on it could be a variety of things including but not limited to the o2 sensor, throttle positioning sensor, and the MAF and MAP sensors. Best diagnosed by using an OBDII scanner to scan for codes. If no codes are present I would then check for the pressure coming from the fuel pump to make sure it is still functioning.
