Changing the fuel pump/gas guage in a 2001 Impala is easy because it's very accessible. You don't have to drop the fuel tank as has been incorrectly suggested. It can be accessed by folding down the rear seat and then peeling back some of the carpet in the trunk. This will reveal a round cover plate secured by some small aluminum nutts. Your fuel pump/fuel sender sits in the tank under this plate. There are several YouTube videos that will walk you through the entire repair. 2001 Imapala and Monte Carlo are the same. I would advise replacing the entire component (fuel guage and sending unit). I tried to be cheap and replaced just the fuel guage sending unit. Within a year the fuel pump stopped and I had to replace the whole thing anyway.

SOURCE: gas gauge malfunction and engine light stays on

This is a common problem with Malibu's. It is due to cheap metal in the fuel gage that corrodes. Chevrolet knows about this but they refuse to issue a fix. The check engine light staying on and the faulty fuel gage are related. This is a defect and they need to recall this part! Raise hell with the dealership!

SOURCE: 2001 chevy silverado 4.8 gas gauge not working properly

Fairly common problem with GM vehicles. The sending unit in your tank has a small circuit board that an arm is attached to which moves up and down according to your fuel level. This circuit board and arm are not making good contact. Unfortunately the only good solution is to replace this part.

Testimonial: "thought probably that was it but better off replacing whole unit .i was for for gauge proplem thanks. "

u will need to drop the fuel tank and replace the fuel pump module which contains the gas gauge sending unit, it is not sold separately.

This is almost always the sending unit in the tank. Test that (not so easy to access it).

Fuel guage on chevrolet 2001 fluctuates

sounds like a fuel sending unit issue from your description.
see if this fits the bill.

Link Here!!

that is for the

2001 - 2003 Chevy Silverado 2500 Fuel Tank Sending Unit for V8 8.1L

good luck.

by the way the issue may be one or more things to be honest. the fuel in the tank may be moving around and as it shushes from side to side the electrical resistance in the variable potentiometer of the fuel sending unit will either increase or decrease.

an example would be a full tank of gas will cause a floater attached to a lever to float to the top of the gas tank. now as the gas gets lower the level wil drop and so will the float. now remember it's attached to a pot so as it moves it's electrical value decreases. and the gas gauge reads the value as a fuel level.

if the gauge dose not move when the vehicle is idle then id say it;s just the gas moving around within the tank. it's worth a shot to test this before spending any money on it.

good luck.

I have a 2000 3.8 impala that wont take gas and the gas gauge stays full.

Wont take gas and the gas gauge stays full? This question really doesn't make sense. But if you cant put anymore gas in the car and the gauge says full then you have a full tank of gas. If the gauge always says full even when the gas tank is not full then the sender unit is failing or the gauge itself.

Why does the gas guage not register how much gas is in the tank of our 2001 Chevy Impala?

This could be due to a faulty fuel sensor in the fuel tank try draining the fuel tank and replacing the sensor.

01 chevy impala. power mirrors and gas gauge not working

Check all fuses and relays. As far as the gas gauge, you may need a new fuel pump, fuel pump relay, or the float on the fuel pump is loose or came off from ear and tear. The mirrors: check the fuses; also, check, or have the button panel in the door checked to ensure the connection are secure. May need a new switch for the mirrors. I am not familiar with this vehicle; but this is what I suggest doing to solve the issues.
