STARTS BUT WILL NOT STAY RUNNING

ON COLD MORNINGS-TURNS SLOWLY AND STARTS AND RUNS WHEN GAS IS APPLIED, BUT STOPS WHEN FOOT IS TAKEN OFF OF THE ACCELERATOR

  • culp48 Dec 30, 2008

LET UNIT SIT ALL DAY - OUTSIDE TEMP WENT TO MID-60'S, WHEN I TRIED TO START IT-IT WAS SLOW TO START, BUT DID START RUNNING. I REV'ED IT SEVERAL TIMES AND IT WENT TO IDLING OK. BATTERY IS OLDER THAN 2 YEARS OLD, SO I'M GUESSING THAT'S MY PROBLEM. I KNEW THERE WAS A "TPS" BUT DID NOT KNOW HOW TO CHECK IT. WHEN I REPLACE THE BATTERY, WILL IT GIVE ME THE SAME SYMPTOMS UNTIL IT RUNS 2 TO 3 MINUTES? YOU WERE A BIG HELP AND I APPRECIATE IT VERY MUCH. BEN

Check the throttle position sensor"tps",or the idle air control "iac" by chance did the battery go dead or was unhooked?
if so the ecu was reset and needs to relearn idle settings by just keeping it running for a few minutes

    Your welcome Ben

If the battery is only unhooked for a few minutes it will be ok,but places like autozone have a small battery they can plug into the cig lighter to keep memory up when battery is unhooked.

2001 dodge dakoto ran stopped at store turned engine off, back to start engine started but run rough an stalls . wont stay running without foot on gas but runs rough and stalls when take foot off gas

This could be he Idle Control Valve and is around 50 dollars and a easy fix. Also try STP 5 in 1 fuel cleaner for a couple of tanks if you are using the cheap gas

Van starts right up then stalls, unless gas is applied

I'M GUESSING THAT THIS IS THE SAME TRUCK I JUST ANSWERED UNLESS GAS IS APPLIED DO YOU MEAN YOUR STEPPING ON THE GAS AND THE TRUCK WILL KEEP RUNNING THEN YOU TAKE YOUR FOOT OFF AND THE TRUCK DIES TILL YOU START IT AGAIN AND IT RUNS TILL YOU AGAIN TAKE YOUR FOOT OFF THE GAS OR ARE YOU POURING GAS INTO THE THROTTLE BODY TO KEEP IT RUNNING OR IS THE BATTERY DEAD EACH TIME YOU GET IT TO RUN THEN IT STALLS AND YOU HAVE TO JUMP START THE TRUCK WITH THE BATTERY CHARGER EACH TIME YOU TRY? PLEASE CALM DOWN AND BE AS SPECIFIC AS YOU CAN SO I MAY HELP YOU FIND WHATS WRONG I'M NOT STANDING NEXT TO YOU TO SEE IT FOR MYSELF YOU HAVE TO TELL ME WHICH CONDITION WE ARE TALKING ABOUT HERE STEPHEN

My car overheated shut off on me and now it wont stay running unless my foot is on the gas

Sounds like a cracked head. Or possibly a bad head gasket.
Either one of these would explain water coming out of tailpipe.

1983 Mercury Marquis wont stay started

this problem is caused by carbon holding the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve open, it is a very comon complaint, fixed 100's for the issue at my dealer. You can buy a EGR valve carbon trap from the dealer to stop the problem.

2 PART QUESTION, PARKING LIGHTS IN FRONT NOT WORKING AFTER REPLACING WITH WORKING BULBS, BACK LIGHTS WORK .... REPLACED THERMOSTAT HEATER STILL NOT BLOWING AS WARM AS IT SHOULD GOES FROM COLD TO WARM BUT...

Concerning the heater problem.Sounds like you have an air pocket in the system. To remove the air pocket take off the radiator cap in the morning when the car is cold, fill radiator to top.Start the car.Turn on heater to high.Allow car to run until it gets to operating temperature. Now you will see the fluid in the radiator start to go down. This means the thermostat is opening. As fluid goes down fill radiator to top (with 50/50 antifreeze/water mix). You may have to wait a moment for it to continue to move down.Once it stops and the radiator fluid isnt going down, slowly bring up the rpm's (by either turning the throttle with your hand or have someone put their foot on the gas) to about 2000rpms and hold the rpm's there steady. As you hold the fluid will go down a little more.As it does fill to the top again and quickly put the radiator cap back on while the rpm's are steady at 2000.After the cap is correctly on release throttle. This should remove the air posket.
