I have a 2000 BMW 740IL which the starter keeps cranking but not ever time when I turn the ignition. I had the BMW dealer install a new starter but 2 days later the starter continued cranking. Any suggestions?

It's supposed to keep cranking until ignition is acheived that the starter convienience package, its normal operation. If the battery voltage is low then it will only crank when the key switch is completly folded over.So check battery condition under a load with a load tester if batt checks out then look towards the alternater.

What do you mean (But not over time) if you turn the ignition switch to start position it gives signal to the solenoid when you release the ignition switch it supposed to disengage if it dos not the problem is in the switch or the electronics somehow the starter keeps getting juice from somewhere and keeps going The starter you wasted your money getting a new starter the stupid dealer sou ld know better than that

You hooked it up wrong . Is there power at the purple wire all the time ?
ignition the starter was (winding ) ???as soon as I reconnected the battery. The starter cranks the engine !It's really called a cranking motor not starter . Do you know where that comes from ? Before electric starters you cranked the engine by hand . Suggest you take it to a qualified repair shop.

Starting issue with BMW 740iL

this problem is caused by burnt contacts in the starter motor solenoid, this is part of the starter, the solenoid can be replaced separately but most people opt for a rebuilt starter

98 BMW 740iL won't start?

If it is an automatic try turning the ignition on and moving the shifter all the way down and place it in neutral to start it if not then put it in park and make sure it is all the way in good luck! Ed
