Question about 1995 Ford Taurus

Ok, im not sure hot to work this site. this is the 3rd time im entering my question: i have a 95 ford taurus. just replaced radiator/water pump in fairly new. replaced rear valve cover gasket. [still] hearing a knock in egine, it will barely accelerate.????????

Just to make sure. I assume that you are seeing coolant leakage from around the water pump assembly.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Place fender covers on the aprons.
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4. Remove the accessory drive belts.
  5. Remove the timing belt cover.
  6. Use a wrench on the crankshaft pulley to rotate the engine so No. 1 piston is on TDC of the compression stroke.
Turn the engine only in the direction of normal rotation. Backward rotation will cause the timing belt to slip or lose teeth.
  1. Loosen the belt tensioner attaching bolts, then secure the tensioner over as far as possible.
  2. Pull the belt from the camshaft, tensioner, and water pump sprocket. Do not remove it from, or allow it to change its position on, the crankshaft sprocket.
WARNINGDo not rotate the engine with the timing belt removed or serious engine damage could occur. The 1.3L and 1.6L engines are of the "interference type," meaning it is possible for the valves to contact the pistons if their reciprocation is not carefully timed and controlled. An engine allowed to spin freely without the timing belt could bend valves and scuff pistons almost instantly.
  1. Remove the camshaft sprocket.
  2. Remove the rear timing cover stud.
  3. Remove the heater return tube hose connection at the water pump inlet tube.
  4. Remove the water pump inlet tube fasteners and the inlet tube and gasket.
  5. Unfasten the water pump to the cylinder block bolts and remove the water pump and its gasket.

  1. Make sure the mating surfaces on the pump and the block are clean.
  2. Using a new gasket and sealer, install the water pump. Tighten the bolts to 30-40 ft. lbs. (40-55 Nm) on 1981-87 models, or to 15-22 ft. lbs. (20-30 Nm) on 1988-90 models. Make sure the pump impeller is able to turn freely.
  3. Install the water pump inlet tube and the inlet tube gasket and fasteners.
  4. Install the rear timing cover stud. Install the heater return tube hose connection at the water pump inlet tube.
  5. Install the camshaft sprocket.
  6. Install the belt from the camshaft, timing belt tensioner, and water pump sprocket.

Hi there. It sounds like you have done the most obvious checks and I can assure you by-passing the heater core will have no effect. There are three possible causes that you need to investigate further and you will need specialist equipment for it - you either have a hair-line crack in the head or cylinder wall or it might be that the head bolts are stretched and therefore weakened and so need replacement. To help you identify these aforementioned possible problems, you might need a specialist fluid that you put into the cooling system which changes colour when combustion chamber pressure enters the cooling system, you need to contact your local Ford Dealer for this - but then you still have the three possible problems to deal with - cracked cylinder wall/s, cracked head or stretched head bolts. have u bled the cooling system ?warm the car and cut the car off right before the fans come on ,let sit for 30-35 minutes,see if the coolant drops in res. if so repeat process untill coolant stops droping ,then drive car regularly if overheating stops ,but monitor it because it will drop somemore/there has been reports of new and rebuilt water pumps nt having correct propelar mounted on them/ backwards etc. if this helps let me know roniecon@gmail.com

They can be a real challenge to find, especially if the leak is buried somewhere that you really can't see. Then after driving around, the fan and wind spread the coolant all over , making it even more difficult to locate the source. 1st try 'stop leak' which can be purchased at parts stores, you might get lucky and it will fix the problem. Sounds like a good idea to replace the radiator if it's rusty. You could have a leak at the head gasket, or even a freeze out plug on the block. A couple of suggestions to help locate it: pick up a small mirror at a parts store, the kind that folds and extends. Get the car up in the air so you have plenty of room underneath to move around, and securely supported so the car won't fall on you. Clean off any drips or visible coolant. Start the car and crawl around with your mirror and a good flashlight, and wait for evidence of coolant to appear. It's a matter of patience and poking around to find it. Good luck.

Sounds like the valve cover gasket, clean off all the oil on the engine with a pressure washer or a steam cleaner and then drive it and recheck for the leak, that way you can pin it down for sure.

Lucas, first thing to check for is make sure the cooling fans are coming on. Second thing to check and very common issue after replacing the water pump, is air trapped in the system. Make sure you get all the air out of the system. Some systems have an air bleed screw to help with this issue. If the fans are coming on and all the air is out of the system, then you'll want to check for coolant flow in the radiator. CAUSION: Let the engine cool before taking the cap off the radiator. After removing the radiator cap start the engine and let it idle, if the coolant does not flow after reaching operating temp, then you may have a restriction somewhere in the system. The other thing to check is make sure you put the thermostat in correctly, some vehicles you can install it backward, make sure the spring end is going toward the engine. If you have coolant flow and the coolant is blowing out of the radiator you may have a blown head gasket or timing issue. I have a 1994 ford Taurus that has new plugs new thermastat new water pump new coil wires but car is still overheating


does putting heater on hot prduce hot air.on full with fan on does it reduce temo?is ur radiator fan coming on? hard to give one answer.as dont know if its overheating in traffic or on the move?there could be air stuck in pipes slowing water flow.or a pipe/radiator blockage so coolant doesnt get to flow around engine so it gets hot.u could check radiator by touching see if hot or cold where pipes enter(prob switch off engine first) try bleeding system squeesing pipes to push air out

Use a flat blade screwdriver if its got two jubilee clips make sure the car is cold!,,,,as you risk burning yourself also after you replace the hose put water in and put heater settings on hot start the car let it get to temperature halfway on temp guage switch car off and let cool down completly check water level and top up if neede

ok check these things #1 check for leaks at the radiator #2 water pump for leaks#3 check for freeze plug leak#4 check to see if your cooling fan works#5 check to make sure the water jug is not leaking#6 fill the radiator with water then start your engine and try to see if you can tell if the water flows,if its not flowing check the thermostat,now you can check the thermostat by putting it down in some boiling hot water if while in the hot water it contracts its ok but i would replace it because it is work to go back to do so,check your radiator cap also,now if the fans are the problem then you should change the coolant temp sensor for the fans ,now i hope after making these check you will be able to solve the problem

The heater does not blow hot air just cold air all vent controls work.if running air conditioning can control temp with the hot cold control


The first thing to check is the coolant (antifreeze) level in your radiator. If this level is too low it could cause your heater not to blow hot air. Check this when the engine is cold by removing the radiator cap. Do not remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. If you do, you run the risk of getting scalded by hot water and steam that can shoot out the top of the radiator. The radiator should be completely full. If it's not, fill it up with a 50/50 solution of antifreeze and water. Also make sure the radiator overflow tank is filled up to the full mark. This is usually about halfway up the tank.
If your coolant level is ok I suspect you may need to replace the thermostat. It may be sticking shut and not letting hot water get to your heater core, or it may be sticking open and preventing your engine from reaching its normal hot operating temperature. A thermostat is relatively inexpensive and usually easy to replace. Just make sure you follow the instructions and put it in facing the right direction. If the thermostat is ok then you may have a blockage in your heater core. Replacing a heater core can be a difficult job on some car. If this is your problem I recommend taking the car into a garage to have the repair done. I hope this helps you out.

Dash Temp Gauge reading extremely hot


You need to pressure test the cooling system. If it holds pressure, I would look at replacing the water temp. sensor. If it doesn't hold pressure, you have a coolant leak going on. If you don't see it dripping on the ground or inside the car, I would be suspecting head gasket problem.
