SOURCE: 2001 Honda Odyssey Transmission Problem

My Honda Odyssey 2001 transmission died last week. I had the car towed to a Honda Dealer. After giving my VIN # to the dealer, they replaced my transmission at no cost because it fell within the 7 year, 100 K mile extended warranty Honda was giving due to the class action suit on Honda Odyssey transmissions of the specified years 1999-2003 I believe. I paid nothing and I have a new transmission!

SOURCE: Honda odyssey 2005

The tranny fluid on most cars and trucks is 30,000 miles ,as far as the engine oil if you use a good oil brand like Honda motor oil or even like Motorcraft they are a synthectic blend 5w20 and you can go 5,000 miles between oil changes. Now if your useing regular motor oil change it every 3,000 miles.Hope that helps

SOURCE: Transmission fluid/filter change in 2000 Honda Odyssey

I would not recommend using Dexron III. Honda Odysseys are prone to transmission problems. A drain and fill with Genuine Honda Fluid is Recommended. The drain plug can be removed with a 3/8 ratchet at the bottom of the trans. The fill hole is at the top of the trans. You remove it with a socket on a long extension. The capacity is close to 3 quarts

Transmission slips

The transmissions in those years were built by a company in Ohio and all had problems due to faulty manufacturing. Some people report Honda fixing them as a recall even though there was no official recall on them. A correctly maintained Honda transmission should last well over 200k. Google "Odyssey transmission problems", do some research and you may get it replaced for free. If it's high mileage and has not been maintained than the clutches in the transmission are worn out and it's time to replace it as normal service.

2003 odyssey studders @ 50 -55 mph seems to studder more if i press on throttle then fall back to 50-55

1999-2003 Honda Odysseys have trouble with their transmissions. Google "honda odyssey transmission" and look at the wikipedia article that comes up for Honda odysseys. In about the fourth paragraph you will find out about the transmission problems. If your van is acting up, have the transmission checked out sooner vs. later. It won't get better on it's own. Have the diagnostic trouble codes retrieved from the car's computer--any code that starts with 17 as in "1740" or codes that start with zero like "0730" are transmission codes and signs of impending failure. I know because my 2002 with 165,000 miles just failed.

Transmission Fluid explodes out under hood.

this year of van had a recall for the transmission because the second gear was getting too hot. It required a dealer to install a special part that spliced into the transmission cooler lines and dumped fluid down the transmission fill plug hole and onto the second gear. Perhaps under high speed, the slice is leaking. Check to see if you have this part and see if the splice clamps are loose. If so, tightening them may help.
