Question about 1996 Ford Ranger SuperCab
When diving down the road the truck just dies and if I jump it, it starts right up. We changed the battery and the alternator. Still not charging the battery. We saw that one of the fuses was blown so we stuck a relay in and that worked for a while and today it blew the relay. At this point we are completely lost to what is wrong with the wiring.
Fusible link blown ? With a voltmeter check for B+ voltage at the heavy gage wire on the back of the alternator .Is the charge indicator light lit on the instrument cluster . Do you know what a wiring diagram is ? Free wiring diagram here http://www.bbbind.com/free_tsb.html Enter vehicle info. year , make , model and engine size. Under system click engine ,then under subsystem click charging . Click the search button then the blue link . Watch video on youtube checking alternator electrical .Power & ground !

have the alt tested there not very good do you have 12 volts going to the big wire on the alt and with key on you should have it to a small wire going to the regulator to turn it on

has anyone thought about the regulator, i think that its built into the alt, replace it and then see if the prob continues, you can get a pass on the alt test and still have a bunk regulator

If there is power to the big wire that is bolted on to the back of the alternator and no power out of the small wires that plug in to the alternator then it is possible you need to replace your alternator. start the vehicle and check to see if there is 14 volts at the battery while the vehicle is running if there is then the alternator is good if not replace your alternator and charge your battery with a charger to make sure you have a proper charge on the battery.

you will need to do a test with a battery light disconnect the negative wire on the battery and connect one end of the test light to the battery and the other to the terminal with everything switched off if the test light is lit you have a draw if it is not lit then it is something else sometimes door switches and glove box switches wear out and need added lift to properly shut the open circuit down
