2006 Toyota Tacoma SR5 4 doors long bed. This is my work transportation. I an A.S.E Truck Tech. I change oil every 3000 miles. I give my vehicles the best care & service possible. I do not tow with my truck. I did not hear any clunk, vibration or any noise what so ever from the rear end. I drove and park my truck. The next morning I crank the engine, shift to reverse, release the parking & the truck will not move in neither direction. The dealer checked the brakes, they were not locked up. The Dealer will replace the rear end. The truck have warrenty coverage. I post this differential problem. I will like to know if they are other 20006 Tacoma with this problem.

You can buy the step-by-step repair manuals for this truck from your local dealer, it makes things a lot easier.

just wanted to stop to offer some tips. I just put in new brakes on last night. I too had the same problem. The brakes were fine, but I replaced them anyway. The drum seem fine, and my emergency cable was a bit loose too. What you can try is hiting the ebrake while going in reverse or in drive. It may help. If not, adjust the ebrake cable will be needed, it not too hard to do. It should be by the rear tires towards the center.

Ok one inch is a lot.I'm thinking damaged spline or bent axle, not sure on how you removed the old bearing,Did you do both sides and mix up the axles and put the left on the right and the right on the left.Try to put the axle in to the point to where the axle just starts to spin with the drive shaft and see how much further it goes in.Maybe you have a bad carrier bearing causing the carrier to be slightly out of alignment.I have seen a few chevy trucks with limited slip differential that the axle had to be tapped in with a hammer (very soft hit).Should slide right in though.I don't know what else to tell you it is pretty straight foward.Did you drain the fluid out of the rear and was it clean or any chunks on the drainplug magnet.Let me know what happened and if you need any more help

5 speed auto
The dealer replace the differential and now a new problem. When I apply the brakes @ 30 to 40 MPH the truck shakes. I am taking it back to the dealer.
1st 5 speed that I have noted with a bad diff. I have changed 5 diffs already, 2006 model year, all with the 6-speed. I returned all 5 to California for evaluation.
To answer your question properly, there was an issue.
I'll bet you have a 6 speed transmission, yes?
