04 dodge ram 1500 HEMI's new brake pads won't fit

The piston won't retract

  • dubby744 Jan 03, 2009

thank you so much for the quick response and information. unfortunately, my son-in-law broke the passenger side caliper (i'm assuming because he was forcing it open for the new brake pad to fit). grrrr.... after all that, i had to take it to a brake shop anyway. in a perfect world, my husband would be a mr. fix-it-man, (ergo - not needing my son-in-law) and my truck would never need maintenance stuff like this. but, we do not live in a perfect world so, i'm glad i found this website for future maintenance repairs. i bet i can do little maintenance stuff myself or sweet talk my husband into doing them knowing that we have a new internet vehicle repair GOD (you) out there. thanks again and i hope you have a wonderful new year!

What you need to do is line clamp brake hose so you dont push dirty brake fluid back into your system..(you can use a pair of needle nose visegrips if you dont own an actual line clamp) loosen bleeder at this point, remove caliper from attatching bracket, with old pad still installed next to piston use a big C-clamp to compress piston, just make sure clamp is centered and compress slowly allowing brake fluid to escape through loosened bleeder... once compressed tighten bleeder and install caliper and pads remove lineclamp....******NOTE******* no need to bleed the system cause of lineclamp procedure... Make sure upon reassembly you use plenty of brake lube on all sliding caliper parts...Good Luck

Are Dodge Chrysler and Dodge 1500 pick up brakes and rotor the same?

Question edited for clarity and spelling and added a few capital letters. Wrong type of break > brake.

Don't sweat the details, just buy the right part.

Or if you have a box of new ones, look the part up and compare online.

04 DODGE Ram hemi cylinder 3 misfire

Check engine compression and compare. then test running engine compression most engines have about 130-170 cranking compression and about 90-110 running compression. OR bring that cylinder to its Top Dead Center compression stroke apply air to the cylinder and check to see where the air is going open throttle plate bad intake valve, from exhaust pipe bad exhaust valve, from oil cap piston rings.

How to put rear brakes on

Remove the caliper mounting bolts and remove the caliper. Replace brake pads as necessary. Special tool is required to retract caliper piston to fit over new pads. (see picture below)
Retract piston in caliper using special tool to rotate clockwise and make sure the notch in the piston is aligned properly so the tab on the inner pad will fit in properly.
Reinstall caliper assembly and caliper mounting bolts.

On one side, the brake rotor fits fine, but on the other side it sits a little loose, and the rotor is fine but it causes it to squeak while driving as if I was riding with brakes on

its a sticky caliber piston,,,strip out the disk pads and push the cylinder pistons right back into the calibers to free them off first ,,then clean off the sides of the brake pads and put a little copper grees on the back of the pads,,not on the frounts!!! then put them back in and pump up the brakes before you drive away,,,,the copper grees on the back of the brake pads will stop the pads squeaking,,,,,its an easy fix,,all ways greeas pads

My 04 Dodge Ram 1500 5.7L Hemi will not start. Battery SEEMS fine, all electronics work when key is turned, but engine does nothing.

this could be a fulty starter motor or if its an auto box it could be the safty cut out on the box causing it not to start,,, there fitted so you can start the car and run yourself over doing it?,,,,i did that once!,,,put it in park or neutral with foot brake on and see if this starts it up,, if not, try shorting out this switch ,,,if a stick shift its likley to be just the starter at fult

Installing brake pads on 2004 ram 1500

get a c-clamp and take one of the old pads and place on the caliper piston. screw the clamp till the piston is fully seated. make sure to apply pressure evenly to not damage the seal.

do one side at a time or you may cause the other sides piston to pop out of the caliper. if both sides are already disassembled, you can take the old pads and place them in the other caliper, so the piston movement is limited.

after the piston is seated, put the new pads into the brace, it should be fairly obvious where they go. put the caliper on the bracket and install and tighten the bolts.

I would suggest buying a repair manual from an auto store, especially if you have never done a brake job before.

hope this helped.
