SOURCE: My 93 Saturn SL2 intermittent stalling issues

I would look at the egr system. First pull the valve and clean it. If you have a vacuum tester this would be a good time to test the valve itself as well. When under load you should be able to see the diaphragm engage and hold and then release as you release the vacuum. If that doesn't work check and/or replace the egr solenoid. It's located on the driver's side of the valve cover and usually runs about 60$.

Yours is a common complaint and the above is the most common remedy. Outside of that you might want to check and clean the idle air control valve and the port where it's housed. If it is extremely dirty or something managed to get stuck in there that could affect you vehicle running at idle as well.

Another thing, even though you just changed the plugs, pull one back out and look at it. If is fouled with oil you might need a new valve cover gasket which if it's leaking badly enough will impede spark.

SOURCE: 98 Saturn Sl2 overheat

If it overheated without being low on coolant the first time you may have a themostat sticking. But I would start with a check of all the hoses for cracks or loose clamps. Also check leakage at the front of the motor from the water pump. It's hidden behind the a/c compressor but you should see splash marks on the hood if it's leaking there. For good info on how to fix it yourself try www.saturnfans.com. There are a lot of good tech tip articles for the S series cars. I lost a water pump pulley at about 90,000 overheated five times getting home. The car now has 230,000 on it and still going strong.

SOURCE: 97 saturn sl2 temp light flashing and low coolant

If the temp gauge is reading normal, the lights are flashing, and the coolant level is full, the level sensor in the coolant bottle is the problem. I'm a service consultant for a Saturn dealer and I've run across this many times.

My 2003 Saturn VUE is saying that I'm over-heating (both the warning light stays on, and the gauge stay pegged hot) even after my car has been sitting in the driveway for 2-3 days (or longer). There is not...

i'd change the engine temperature sender unit , or just disconnect it for a while and see if the gauge symptoms disappear , if they do then change the temp sender unit,if the symptoms remain i'd say get the OBD codes read as may have a faulty dash component

try unplugging map sencer, it should be on top side of engine, a black plastic box about 2 inches wide and 3 1/2 inches long, or throttle position sencer could be bad causing engine to idle from high to low. Hope this is some help 2 you.

The temp gauge reads correctly for a while then it starts going from cool to hot faster the water can change temp. I have changed the sensor

try the thermostat, located on the top radiator hose. top side of engine. also does it steam?? does it lose water but no leak, does the heat blow hot? if your heat isnt hot and it steams and loses water you may have a cracked head or head gasket. if you have heat, doesnt lose water and doesnt steam it may also be your water pump. most pumps will leak visibly from the weep hole when running

first determine if the car is actualy getting hot.dont trust the gauge or fan for these are controled by a temp sensor, if the sensor went bad it will tell you its hot. the other thing it might be is a air bubble trapped in the system

Temp Gauge Creeps Up

I would take it in and have then do a block test to be sure you don't have a head gasket issue, Does the coolant get low after a few days or so. This could be a sign.
Also sometimes its hard to get all the air out when you drain the coolant and fill up. Be sure the coolant bottle is up to the ok line..
And if everthing checks out ok then maybe your ready for a water pump. The fan blades on them tend to wear down then they dont pump water too good.
Lastley your radiator could be clogged.
Best bet is to go to a shop and pay the 50 bucks give or take and let them tell you whats wrong

You either have a bad engine coolant temp sensor & connector.Located under upper radiator hose at cylinder head Yellow & black wire.Original sensor is ceramic & replacement will be brass from saturn. Also you may check for vacuum leaks at PCV hose & valve.Hope this helps
