Need to remove the dashboard from my 1992 Ford Ranger to find and repair a water leak. Water drips in when it rains, I suspect it must have rusted near the drain holes on the driver and passenger side. The only way to get to the passenger side is from the inside of the cab. The driver side can be reached from the access panel from the engine side on the firewall.

there are drainage hoses in the cowl to carry the water away sounds like one is disconected. Is it still under warranty? the dealer will fix if for free if you are.

The condensation drain is plugged in the heater/AC plenum, the drain is under the hood at the very bottom of the firewall on the passenger side.

You likely have a water leak around the 3rd brake light mounted on the top rear of the cab. I had this same issue on my 96 Ranger Supercab and found that the foam seal had gone bad and was allowing water to leak into the back of the headliner around the light fixture. It ended up soaking the headliner from one side to the other as the headliner acts as a 'wick'. You can repair this issue by either replacing the sealant around the 3rd brake light or replacing the brake light. There are two screws which secure the 3rd brake light assembly to the back of the cab. Remove these and it will pop right out. I upgraded mine to an LED light when I replaced it. That solved two issues at once as I'll never need to change a bulb there again. If you want to be cheaper you can not replace the light and just seal it with rubber silicone sealer.

if you can remove the plastic "cowl" section(s) at the base of the windshield and clear out any debris.sticks,dirt,acorns,mud,etc. THEN run a garden hose where the rain normally would run down and "flush"the drainage paths at each end by each fender. see if that fixes the problem. theres also a possibility that the windshield seal could be bad.

You have a hole in your heater core. This is an involved and difficult job that has vehicle specific steps ( My jeep calls for 10 shop hours to change heater core as the entire dash has to come apart as well as the passenger side of the engine compartment). If you do not have extensive mechanical skills I recommend taking it to a shop. If you want to try it yourself, get a manual to see just exactly how involved it is. There is a way to stop the fogging and smell but you will not have heat afterwards - or defrost. Measure the diameter of the heater core hoses ( passenger side of the firewall, small Diameter ( 5/8 inch or so) hoses and take the measurements to your local auto parts store for a straight adapter and clamps. Remove both clamps from fire wall nipples and place adapter from one hose to the other. install and tighten clamps, then top off Radiator. You may be able to find a small ceramic heater that will plug into the cigarette lighter to clear the windshield and warm you slightly, and this will hold the job off until you can afford the fix - being able to use the car, that is!!
Hope this helps!!
