How long since a tune-up? Any applicable trouble codes? Some of the national brand auto stores in the US will check po codes for free, if check engine lite is on.
With intermittent issues, have to do testing when problem is ongoing. If it cranks good but won't start, have a helper crank it, while you check for spark at the plugs. If spark everywhere, use a gage and check proper fuel pressure. I looked at info for 3.4L engine, fuel pressure, key on engine off, 48--55 psi. At idle about 10 psi less.
Crank the starter intermittently, so it doesn't get too hot.
Another thought is intermittent rpm signal? That comes from crank sensor, you have two crank sensors on this vehicle. A trouble code might point us in the right direction?
Probably the fuel pump going out.

Change your fuel filter, it may have gone it's life time and is getting to dirty to let fuel flow properly. Your fuel pump to may be getting weak, if the fuel filter is dirty the pump works harder and heats up and could be over heating the fuel pump relay too. The fuel pump relay i believe is in the glove box behind a panel that say relay, there should be (3) in there and the middle one is the fuel pump's. switch then around after you change the fuel filter and if you get a chance, check your fuel pressure at the shredder valve. Good luck and hope this help's if there is a Auto Zone around you, you can ask to use the fuel pressure gauge to see what fuel pressure you have and they'll have the step by step instructions on how to do it and takes about 5 min to do and will have the fuel filter and step by step to replace that too. From your description of the problem, I would suggest you check and make sure the ground to your fuel tank and fuel assembly is clean and tight, and no wires are broken. It sounds like you have a bad (loose) ground, which would cause both the fuel gauge to jump around, and the fuel pump to quit unexpectedly, like on a hard corner. Dropping the truck could jiggle the loose connection so that it worked, again. Before spending the $600, make sure your ground is good. If the bad ground is inside the unit, then you will have to get it replaced, but make sure it's not just a loose wire, first.

It is possible that the car was at an angle enough to keep the pick up tube from picking up fuel,But with a 1/4 tank of gas you would think it had enough gas in tank, could be that the pick up tube is broke of short in the tank. I have seen it a few times in the past. Pick up tube gets to vibrating no question, it can and has happened..
