you must test to find your problem start by checking for spark if you have spark than test for fuel if you have fuel and no spark it will be one of these things coil, cam position sensor, crankshaft position sensor ignition switch ,ecm, or bad or loose connection, or connections on your wireing

if is a fuel problem test pressure on fuel rail .this takes a fuel pressure gauge. (auto zone loans these at no charge if no pressure check for blown fuel pump fuse ,also check your emergancy fuel cut off switch ( reset it) if still no pressure check for broken fuel line, pluged fuel filter or a bad fuel pump.)

There are many possibilities. It could even be that it is out of gas. If unknown, take it to an auto shop to have it looked at.
and i think you can do it by yourself , but you need a diagnostic tools. if you want to buy one you can click here: allobd2.com

If all the coils are giving spark now, then you moat likely have gas fouled plugs now,so change them out with new ones, all 8 of them.If you do not have spark on all plug wires, pull the timing belt cover, and align the cam shaft and the cam,to see if the belt has jumped. If It hasn`t,replace the crankshaft sensor.

Replace the TFI module. Ford back in 1986 thur 1993 had problems like the one you wrote about. TFI module gets hot and shuts car or truck off then when it cools sometmies starts and sometimes not.

SOURCE: 1997 ford explorer cuts off while driving down

If you confirmed spark is there, and you hear fuel pump working, I'd still try spraying WD-40 in throttle body intake for a couple of seconds, when it won't start, just to see if it kicks over, just in case pump is running but not up to pressure. If it fires for a second or 2 with WD-40, then you know lack of fuel is the problem.

1992 Ford Ranger cranks and cranks then starts

Key it on and off 3 or 4 times. If it starts right up, the check ball is stuck, letting the fuel drain back to the tank. Like Tom said, fuel pump. If it were mine I would live with it till the pump started acting up.

The engine just dies when going down the road and when I try to re-start, the motor won't turn over. Why is this happening?

You didn't tell us is you have the 4 banger, 3.0 or 4.0 V6 engine.

The engine can stall for a number of reasons. For a engine to run it requires air, fuel, compression, and spark at the proper time. I doubt air is the problem. The fuel pump may be cutting out (bad pump, bad relay, bad pump wiring inside the tank (my 93 3.0 Ranger had the last issue). The engine stall could be a lack of fire to the plugs. A bad (cracked) coil, ignition module problem, EFI computer or wiring problem, or maybe an ignition switch problem. The starting system is somewhat isolated and pretty much separate from the ignition system in general. This makes me suspicious of your ignition switch.

87 ford ranger wont start replaced pulugs and wires

Common Sense - tells you that replacing spark
plugs & wires, while they may be an issue, or due
to be replaced, they won't all fail at once & cause
a no start

You need to check for fuel pressure at the motor
with a gauge & check for spark or injector pulse, while
cranking the motor with the starter.

Compression has to be on all cylinders & any timing
belt or chain in place & working correctly

1992 ford ranger just cuts off while driving down the road...just like you turn the switch off

I was hoping you would say it has to cool down first, I was suspecting an ignition module. It's starting to sound like a loose wire somewhere. You might try starting the engine, then pop the hood and start wiggling wires. Hopefully something will kill the engine and you'll know where to look. Mostly wiggle any connectors you might see, they are the most likely to have issues.
