My car will run for several miles then begins to miss badly and shake until it stalls out and rolls to a stop. After waiting 10-15 minutes, it will start again and go another few miles. This happens over and over. Also, when it first occurred, the dash trouble light of an amber colored wrench appeared. Now, the wrench and the check engine light both light.

Take a good close look at the rubber strip between the windshield and the plastic shroud the wipers are mounted in. If it is not a tight seal on the passinger side water can run down and get the Pcm wet. When the Pcm gets just a little water on the connector it can cause the problems you describe. If it gets alot of water on it it can and fills the Pcm up, then you will have major problems. It will set error codes for everything and anything.
This is a defect in the design of the vans and the only way to fix it is to make sure that this rubber seal is tight against the glass (especially on the passinger side).
I had to have my Pcm replaced because of water (not a cheap fix) and the dealer did what Ford recommends. It filled with water again. After the third try I gave the dealer a piece of an inner tube from a wheel barrow tire and had them place it over the connector and seal it against the fire wall. Then I used aquarium sealant and glued the little rubber strip to the windshield.
I haven't had any more problems since.
The Pcm connector is probable the most critical part of the electrical system and they placed it in the worst possible place.
Ford knows of the problem but will do nothing to fix it.
Mine cost over $800 to fix, but believe it or not my insurance paid for part of it because it was water damage.

If you live in the US, take it into an Auto zone store and they will read off the stored codes for you. Once you have the codes you can decide on a course of action.
Other major auto parts outlets may offer the same service, as they all want your parts business. Give them a call.
Hope this is of some help.

could be a durty fuel injactor or fuel pump going bad also ford has an issue with mass air meters
Here are the most common causes of idle surge, rough idle esp when cold and stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
