Side to side shake in steering wheel when applying brakes cannot feel anything in brake pedal, shake gets progressivly worse after each application.Vehicle has a hydra vac brake system.Becomes quite violent after 5 or 6 brake applications repeatedly when ever I apply the brakes on my nissan xterra 2007, at speeds over 50mph, I get the steering wheel shakes, and the more I apply the ,more violent the wheel shakes.
I believe you need your disk brake rotors turned to be true again or have them replaced. Whe you use your brakes a lot and kit puddles of cold water then it will warp the rotors which will cause the violent shaking. You may not feel it in the brake pedal even if it is warped rotors. If you don't think you have warped rotors then you should be very careful driving it because it will probably be in the steering sector arm or the idler arm on the steering shaft.

Hi Skoli Bigger tires shouldn't have anything to do with it unless when you brake and the front end comes down, they may be rubbing the frame or fender wells but you didn't say anything about noise. The bigger tires are mostly taller and not much wider so I don't think they would be rubbing the frame or stabalizer bar or anything. As onyeredson stated about the balancing of the tires, you would get a vibration all of the time. Not just when braking. You may check for rubbing around the frame but I don't think you will find any. You said you had it aligned so they should have checked out all the steering controls for wear and failure. I still believe it is in the rotors.

Oh yes. I forgot to tell you. The bigger the tire, the more the brakes have to work to slow it down so you are putting more pressure on the rotors. Plus you said you had the Hydro-boost system which is ten times the pressure applied to the brakes as a regular vacuum booster will apply. So if you ever slam on the brakes it could warp the rotors very easily.

Hi! Although my collegue has pointed out the possibility of Discs being warped or out of true? Have you thought of the wheel balancing? also have you tried changing the rear wheels to the front? you may have a well imbalanced wheel or a Tyre with a side wall defective i.e. an Egg? (Buldge). Another problem on big tyres is they don't seat correctly, check the beading is settled in fully.
Hope this helps!

Thanks Dale, I have always suspected same, but a friends suv also started giving same steering vibrations on applying breaks, but it started only after he put new bigger tyres. I also started to notice the vibrations after I put a new set of tyres 3 months ago. The suv came with 265/70R16 tyres, but I replaced them with 275/70R16, could this have anything to do with it?
The first thing I did after installing the new tyres were to do the balancing and alignment. I will check to see if they are well seated. Thanks

Wouldn't make a sharp turn but managed a slighter angle turn and then became unlocked after I completed the corner. Is working now but there is a louder than normal click in steering column when turn signal is applied.
2000 tundra shakes while on the gas pedal. The wheel doesn't shake, and doesn't seem to pull to either side. Shifts hard when first stepping onto the gas pedal.
