Ok
car when running runs great, good gass milage, good power, no hickups. has cut out on me, like it was running on two cilinders twice in one night in stop and go trafic mostly stop, nothing like that since, but the main problem is starting, will turn over but wont even try to start. then out of the blue it will fire up like noting is wrong. takes between 2 to ? attempts to start it before it will start. has fuel pressure, unclear as to how much pressure but it is there. havent tested for spark yet but has new plugs and wires. 155 k miles, ran a self diagnostic test and came up with error codes: 12, 51,51,55, have looked them up but havent found any simptoms that 51 causes that match what is going on with my car? 12 was caused when i unpluged my batt to clean it, and 55 is end of errors. unclear as to why it would list 51 twice? i am assuming i am missing something, i have also looked into the cam position sensor, i cant seem to find it to check wires, would a loose wire cause it to not start but once started run fine? any help would be great.
hello ok so this is glass69ss i am unable to log back into my account at this time so ignore the "i have the same problem" title. Philriden thank you for you input it is greatly needed! ok update i re ran the self diognostic and got a new code 35 but no 51 this time. also i have moved the relays around they are all the same one, so i swaped them. no change. also there is no spark when trying to start it, so i tested the four wires going into the coil/distributer when it starts and runs all four wires have power, when cranking all four wires have power, when the key is in the on position, only one wire has power. there are no other wires going to the coil/distribute. i am under the usumption that if all four wires have power i should have spark? hello ok so this is glass69ss i am unable to log back into my account at this time so ignore the "i have the same problem" title. The code 51 is your automatic shutdown relay control. and the crank position sensor is on the bellhousing behind the passenger side valve cover.
Have you replaced any relays? Let me know.

Before you spend the bucks, get an auto electrician or good diy'er to check its actually dead. You are going to look silly if its a fuse or poor connector. If you've done this then its parts house or junkyard, both will give you some idea how difficult it is to change. Some are relatively easy, just fiddly. Some are buried in the dash and need major surgery.
Could be fuel pump is going out. Its getting hot not working properly and when it cools down it works right again for a short period. Ive seen this happen several times.
No its not that common, but your car is 17 years old, I would change the switch. its located on the steering column about half way down. under the dash
The on board computer does not show the error code using the MIL (check engine light ) In my case the fault is in the crankshaft sensor. Had to get the car to a shop to read the OBD1 port to find the error. Replaced the sensor and everything is good. Found out a fault in the cam sensor will cause the same strange issue with the cruise light.
ok update
51 51 is more likely 66? but cant find a code 66?
thanks
