Recently purchased truck.. 108k mi, 20k on transmission... No problems with transmission at all until I changed out the engine oil sending unit., I started the oil sending unit job and let truck sit for a few days due to rain.. Battery was down removed battery, charged, hooked back up. Now I can hear a noise like a dole valve, transmission engages then neutrals out. Let sit for at least 10 minutes and transmission will run for a few feet and totally quit, making noise as described. Transmission fluid and clarity good. Don't know if problem is coincidental or something I did. Makes no sense. I did extend the oil sending unit with 6 inch nipple and tee so I could easily hook up a mechanical oil test guage. by removing cap on t...(oil pressure came back up and looks great.)
The engine oil sending unit has nothing to do with the transmission problem you are facing neither does a drained battery,If the transmission fluid was low it will neutral out at idle and only engage very harshly when warm,so the level is ruled out,That dole valve noise is of concern that can be the transmission pump or the torque convertor,Just out of curiosity, the transmission pan its not smashed up is it?This is a long shot remove the transmission pan make sure the trans filter did not pop out.And since you have the trans pan out see if there is shiny brass or metal shaving in the pan if there is you are dealing with a internal transmission failure
I am in the process of flushing the transmission.. The pan was normal.. There is no magnet in the pan, but I did not see any signs of metal whatsoever. However there was about a half a cup of black sludge that had accumulated in the bottom of the pan, and the filter looked clogged. I have to get another filter, the one I picked up was not exactly correct. I have cleaned everything and watched videos on how to do a proper fluid and filter change. The transmission is an e40-d. Thanks.
I have fixed the problem. by cleaning the pan and replacing the fluid.. However in the process I found that the connector to the device that mounts on the transmisson near the shifter and connects to the computer was missing the lock down tabs and was somewhat loose.. I removed and cleaned. So I don't know if this had anything to do or it was just sludge blocking the filter. Thanks for the help.
Cancel the last posting, I didn't fix the transmission by changing out the fluid and filter. I took the truck for a test drive in the morning and everything ok for about 10 miles.. Tried again in the afternoon, and was left stranded at the traffic light.. Turned vehicle off, waited a few minutes and it worked till I got it home. Maybe internal electrical device heating up and failing. ?????
????....continued.. Also was making that whining noise, similiar to the fuel pump but from the transmission.. I have to go up a big hill to get home. Had to stop and start the engine several times to make it, and the xmission slipped and struggled up the hill. It had no problem up the hill earlier this day.

the starter should be replaced. The solenoid is kikcing the pinion out but there is no contact being made to turn the starter motor. I have the exact same truck and before i changed the starter used the old starter tap trick. Tap the starter casing with a hammer and it should start turning again. hope this was helpful for you. Good luck.

You might have to try to adjust the freedom of clutch pedal,
The noise during shifting can be adressed to exessive wear clutch parts or again it might be a sign that indicates the not complete enabling the calutch
To find out what is causing the noise, set the parking brake, place the vehicle in neutral and start the engine.
If you hear growling or grinding noises when the clutch is engaged, the cause is the transmission input shaft bearing.
A squealing sound that occurs when the clutch pedal is depressed and held is usually caused by a bad pilot bearing or bushing.
A chirping noise that intensifies when the pedal is slowly depressed would indicate a bad release bearing.
If you hear chirping while idling in neutral and the noise goes away when the pedal is slowly depressed, the fork/pivot ball contact point is making the noise
Hope that helps.

Check the light under the hood, the switch may be bad and the light stay's on all the time and over the visor. Check to make sure the vanity light is off also. It's just a start and i have known also that the 4X4 actuator will drain too. Keep me posted, be glad to help and it sounds like it's going to be a gremlin to find the battery drain.
