Average time should be around 2-3 hours. Every shop charges different hourly rates. Dealerships will be around at least 80 an hour, smaller shops will run lower.

I am hearing a grinding sound when I drive over 15 mph. It does not occur when I use the brakes or the acceleration pad. The sound occurs only upon the acceleration of the motion of the wheels. Help!

  • Anonymous Apr 24, 2012

Change out your front wheel bearings. Some say don't worry about the back, but I would change those out as well. Hwile your at it, go ahead and change out your Right & Left CV Axles as well for peace of mind. In my used car I'm having the same noise issues and when I go over speed pellets on the highways my steering wheel pitches left and right(hence CV axles) and noise is promenant when I drive over a certain-high speed limit as well(hence wheel bearings).what I'm doing is going ahead and changing out both left/right CV Axles, ALL Hub assemblies, All Wheel bearings, All brake rotors and (if your not sweating by now) all brake pads and last but not least get a front and back wheel alignment done. If the technician notices wear on the inner side wall of the tires, prepare to change out your Shocks and struts as well!! After this is done, your good to go for another 3-4 years!! If your bogged down and don't have the money to have all of this service done-you MUST at least change out both front left/right CV Axles AND ALL your wheel bearings-to be able to drive without worry of your car suddenly stopping down the highway. WORN CV AXLES will immediately stop your vehicle and WORN Wheel BEARINGS WILL SEIZE your vehicle in its tracks as well!!(I had a quote for all the work (minus the shocks and struts) at $1,765.00. the work included: NEW (right/left) CV axles,4 NEW Wheel Hubs,4 NEW wheel bearings(the heavy duty types-made in Japan),4 NEW (thick) brake rotors and 4 new 50/50 mix heavy duty brake pads(made in Japan) that offer minimal to no squeak and no brake dust accumulation around the wheels. Godd luck with your vehicle. Tackle your project one item at a time.Much success...

How much do just the cvc joints cost

The average cv axle nowadays is around $50 in the aftermarket world and around an hour in labor to replace. If you buy just the joint then someone has to rebuild your current axle with the newly purchased joint and is going to charge you labor to rebuild on top of removing and installing which will cost you more then just replacing the cv axle assembly. Its cheaper in most cases nowadays to just replace the the cv axle assembly.

Replace axle but not cv joints

"What we have here is a failure to communicate". The axle comes with CV joints on the end. You will be buying the rebuilt assembly. Both axle and CV joints will refer to the same part in a front wheel drive application.

How much on average is it to repair cv joints?

CV joints as a rule aren't repaired in the shop. Normal protocol is to replace the axles (half shafts) and then send the bad axles to the rebuilder. Prices vary from about $25.00/ea to about $45.00/ea. It should take about 2 hours of labor to cahnge both of them.

CV Joints

You will usually hear a real loud clicking sound when your turning at a tight radius in either direction. Check the rubber boots over the joints. If they are cracked or ripped off you will need to replace them. There will be 2 on each side. If they are real noisy just replace the entire half-shafts. Shop around for axle shaft assy prices, typically $100.00 - $300.00 each side.

CV Joint Axle Replacement - How to Repair or Replace

Over time the rubber boots of the CV joints can become cracked, torn, or otherwise compromised. Once moisture and dirt get into a CV joint and grease makes its way out, the CV joints days are numbered. Signs of impending failures are a click-click-clicking or metallic crackling noise while turning and accelerating or a clunking upon deceleration. While one can repack, reboot, and rebuild CV axles, it makes more sense for the average do-it-yourselfer to procure replacement units and swap out the old axles. If a boot is torn or missing, it is possible to save the joint if caught early enough, but usually the damage has already been done. Replacing or servicing the entire CV joint axle assembly may be the smarter move since replacing a boot may involve removing an axle, which may also involve removing half or all of the vehicle's brakes and suspension.

94 Geo Prizm CV or driveaxle?

on this type of vehichle, you have two axles in the front; one going to each side. Chances are that the boot at the axle joint was torn and that is why you are having problem. In teh past people used to replace the boot, this day and age its actually cheaper to replace the axle. So you would need to replace that side of the axle (the half shaft).
