1st try and search for a vaccum leak, due to the fact that these vehicles have had some bad problems with the length of wires and hoses, if there is a vaccum leak in the vehicle somewhere that will trigger other malfunctions in your vehicle. Using a can of starting fluid or Brake cleaner spray lightly spray around our engine til you hear the motor rev-up and the spot you have sprayed will determine where your vaccum leak will be. And then check under your distributor cap for any moisture be sure to take a rag and wipe and residue off. Also check the firing order on your distributor.

P0356
- Ignition Coil F Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction
The ignition signal from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or Electronic Control Module(ECM) is sent to and amplified by the power transistor. The power transistor turns ON and OFF the ignition coil primary circuit. This ON/OFF operation induces the proper high voltage in the coil secondary circuit.

Symptoms
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Lack/Loss of Power
- The engine may be harder to start
- Engine hesitation

Possible Causes:
- Open or short in the ignition coil circuit
- Ignition coil circuit shorted to ground
- Ignition coil connector
- Damaged ignition coil
- Damaged PCM or ECM

Possible Solution:
- If damage, repair ignition coil circuit
- Replaced ignition coil
- Replaced PCM or ECM
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

P0152 - O2 Sensor Circuit High Voltage (Bank 2 Sensor 1)
The heated oxygen sensor 1 is placed into the exhaust manifold. It detects the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gas compared to the outside air. The heated oxygen sensor 1 has a closed-end tube made of ceramic zirconia. The zirconia generates voltage from approximately 1V in richer conditions to 0V in leaner conditions. The heated oxygen sensor 1 signal is sent to the ECM. The ECM adjusts the injection pulse duration to achieve the ideal air-fuel ratio. The ideal air-fuel ratio occurs near the radical change from 1V to 0V.

Symptoms:
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- High Fuel Consumption
- Excessive Smoke from Exhaust

Possible Causes:
- Harness or connectors (The heated oxygen sensor 1 heater circuit is open or shorted.)
- Front Heater oxygen sensor heater (Bank 2) may be faulty

Possible Solution:
Replacing the O2 Sensor 1 usually takes care of the problem
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

P0174 - Fuel Injection System Too Lean Bank 2
With the Air/Fuel Mixture Ratio Self-Learning Control, the actual mixture ratio can be brought closely to the theoretical mixture ratio based on the mixture ratio feedback signal from the heated oxygen sensors 1. The ECM calculates the necessary compensation to correct the offset between the actual and the theoretical ratios.

In case the amount of the compensation value is extremely large (The actual mixture ratio is too lean.), the ECM judges the condition as the fuel injection system malfunction and light up the MIL (2 trip detection logic).

Symptoms:
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Excessive Fuel Consumption

Possible Causes:
- Intake air leaks
- Front Heated oxygen sensor may be faulty
- Injectors may be faulty
- Exhaust gas leaks
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- Lack of fuel
- Mass air flow sensor may be faulty
- Incorrect PCV hose connection

Possible Solution:
Dirty air filter of faulty air flow sensor are common causes of the problem.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

P2197 - DODGE - Sys Too Rich at Hier Load Bank1
Means that the O2 sensors on each bank are seeing WAY too much oxygen in the exhaust gas. In normal operation the signal from the O2 sensors should swing back and forth between rich and lean. Your sensors are locked on lean.

Those codes are the same as P0174 (and P0171). Sounds like you have a vacuum leak somewhere. Most common place is the PCV elbow where it connects to the throttle body adapter.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hope this helps; keep in touch.

How can I locate the issue with fault code P2331. Scan does not indicate any coil pack #

Current flow, or dwell, through the primary ignition coil is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) by providing a switched ground path through the ignition coil driver to ground. When the ignition coil driver is switched on, current rapidly builds up to a maximum value, determined by the coil inductance and resistance. When the current is switched off, the magnetic field collapses which induces a secondary high voltage surge and the spark plug is fired. This high voltage surge creates a flyback voltage which the PCM uses as a feedback during the ignition diagnostics. The PCM continuously monitors the ignition system for concerns. The P2331 code sets when the PCM detects a short to voltage in the circuit.

Update 2005 Pontiac vibe , giving faults codes p0351,p0352,p0353,p0354,replaced p0352 coil . car running great.

It may run fine but it's in fail safe mode
DTC P0351-P0354
DTCs P0351 through P0354 Ignition Coil Primary/Secondary Feedback Circuit diagnostic monitors the primary circuitry of individual ignition coils for the successful completion of an ignition event. The ignition trigger signal and ignition fail-safe input signal provide crucial information in the control of ignition system timing and the activation of the fail-safe function. Based on the initial timing angle, calculated from the crankshaft and the camshaft position signals, the powertrain control module (PCM) calculates the ignition trigger signal. The ignition trigger signal is then sent to the ignition control circuitry located in each ignition coil. The ignition control circuitry initiates the ignition dwell period by commanding the power transistor ON. When the PCM determines the proper time to provide spark, the PCM turns OFF the ignition trigger signal. In response to the PCM signal, the ignition coil control circuitry turns OFF the power transistor, producing a high voltage discharge from the secondary coil windings. After the spark has occurred, the control circuitry sends an ignition fail-safe input signal back to the PCM, confirming that an ignition event has taken place. If the ignition fail-safe input signal is not received by the PCM, a cylinder specific DTC will set.
Anytime the fail-safe input signal is lost, engine operation will enter the fail-safe function. If engine load exceeds certain parameters during the fail-safe function, Fuel Cut-off mode is activated and fuel injector operation is ceased. The suspension of fuel injection in the Fuel Cut-off mode protects the catalytic converter from damage. Damage can occur when excess unburned fuel reaches the converter and causes the catalyst to overheat.

Diagnostic Aids
• Check for the following conditions:
- An interruption of the ground circuit or voltage supply to the ignition coil will prevent a proper ignition event from taking place. A DTC P0351 through P0354 will set if there is a fault in any of the ignition coil circuits.
- If DTCs P0352, P0353, and P0354 are present, the fault is located in the shared electrical circuits or shared components of the ignition coils.
- Inspect the ignition coil grounds at G 105 for a clean and tight connection.
- The scan tool data parameters for Misfire Current Cylinder # are frozen at the time the MIL illuminates when the DTC sets.
- If no engine misfire is felt when the DTC sets, inspect for a fault in the Ignition Fail-Safe Input circuit.
- Inspect the noise filter for an internal short or low resistance. The ignition coil may not receive adequate voltage during high load conditions if the noise filter is faulty. A good noise filter will indicate infinite resistance (OL) with a DMM after the capacitor inside the filter is charged up.
- Unless the ignition key is cycled or the DTCs are cleared, the PCM waits to receive ignition fail-safe signals before providing fuel injector operation.
• An intermittent malfunction may be caused by a fault in the ignition coil electrical circuit. Inspect the wiring harness and the components for an intermittent condition. Refer to Intermittent Conditions .
• Repair any electrical circuit faults that were found. Refer to Wiring Repairs .
• The information included in the Freeze Frame data can be useful in determining the vehicle operating conditions when the DTC first set.

2003 f-150 engine code po353

Hi I'm Peter, here is a link to codes and below is what it says. http://www.obd-codes.com/p0353

P0353 Ignition Coil C Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction
The COP (coil on plug) ignition system is what is used on most modern engines. There is an individual coil for each cylinder that is controlled by the PCM (powertrain control module).
It eliminates the need for spark plug wires by putting the coil right above the sparkplug. Two wires are dedicated to each coil. One is a battery feed usually from the power distribution center. The other wire is the coil driver circuit from the PCM. The PCM grounds/ungrounds this circuit to activate or deactivate the coil. The coil driver circuit is monitored by the PCM for faults If an open or a short is detected in the driver circuit for coil number 3, a P0353 may set. Also, depending on the vehicle, the PCM may also shut down the fuel injector to the cylinder also.
Symptoms Symptoms of a P0353 DTC may include:
  • MIL (Malfunction indicator lamp) illumination
  • Engine misfire may be present or intermittent
Causes Potential causes of a P0353 code include:
  • Short to voltage or ground on COP driver circuit
  • Open on COP driver circuit
  • Loose connection at coil or broken connector locks
  • Bad Coil (COP)
  • Faulty Powertrain Control Module
Possible Solutions Is the engine misfiring presently? If not, the problem is likely intermittent. Try wiggle testing the wiring at the #3 coil and along the wiring harness to the PCM. If manipulating the wiring causes the misfire to surface, repair the wiring problem. Check for poor connection at the coil connector. Verify the harness isn't misrouted or chafing on anything. Repair as necessary
If the engine is misfiring presently, stop the engine and disconnect the #3 coil wiring connector. Then start the engine and check for a driver signal to the #3 coil. Using a scope will give you a visual pattern to observe, but since most people don't have access to one there's an easier way. Use a Voltmeter in AC Hertz scale and see if there's a Hz reading of between 5 and 20 or so that indicates the driver is working. If there is a Hertz signal, then replace the #3 ignition coil. It's likely bad. If you don't detect any frequency signal from the PCM on the ignition coil driver circuit indicating the PCM is grounding/ungrounding the circuit (or there is no visible pattern on the scope if you have one) then leave the coil disconnected and check for DC voltage on the driver circuit at the ignition coil connector. If there is any significant voltage on that wire then there is a short to voltage somewhere. Find the short and repair it.
If there is no voltage on the driver circuit, then turn the ignition off. Disconnect the PCM connector and check the continuity of the driver between the PCM and the coil. If there is no continuity repair the open or short to ground in the circuit. If continuity is present, then check for resistance between ground and the ignition coil connector. There should be infinite resistance. If there isn't, repair the short to ground in the coil driver circuit
NOTE: If the ignition coil driver signal wire is not open or shorted to voltage or ground and there is no trigger signal to the coil then suspect a faulty PCM coil driver. Also keep in mind that if the PCM driver is at fault, there may be a wiring problem that caused the PCM failure. It's a good idea to do the above check after PCM replacement to verify there won't be a repeat failure. If you find that the engine isn't misfiring, the coil is being triggered properly but P0353 is continually being reset, there is the possibility that the PCM coil monitoring system may be faulty

Peak current is not achieved with battery based dwell plus 1.5 msec of diagnostic offset. It takes less than 3 seconds during cranking or up to 6 seconds while running to set.

POSSIBLE CAUSES
- Ignition coil
- Intermittent condition
- ASD relay output circuit
- Ignition coil driver circuit open
- Ignition coil driver circuit shorted to ground
- PCM
