Putting the old module in can help figure it out. However, most modules are fairly sturdy... It would take a good shock to the system to damage it. It is ideally best to disconnect the battery, but many times it's a safety procaution to avoid accidental engine start ups while working on the vehicle (especially with auto start remotes being accidentally pushed)

i had the same problem with the same conditions and it was a damage wire but you must check the TCM or the fuses box may be the same good luck

SOURCE: Have a winding sound coming from transmission.

I do not believe there is a DIY solution to this problem, You could try Lucas brand transmission fix. Would only help the problem temporarily. You may have a band in the xmsm going out, or a shift valve. I know 45000 miles does not seem like much on a rebuild, but something is going on inside the case. The Lucas xmsn fix is really thick fluid and it sticks in the valves and makes them fill faster to get to the next gear, or as I understand it, may fix whining for awhile, but when it returns you will have to take it to a transmission shop.

SOURCE: 1998 Plymouth Voyager does not shift to 3rd gear when driving,3.3

It's in limp home mode. You'll have to check wire connections and electronic controls. If it has a vacuum modulator you can remove it and look for trans fluid on the vacuum hose side (meaning ruptured diaphram). Double check the parts you replaced as well, especially if they were used parts. My dad went through three speed sensors in one year on his Caravan. You should drop the pan after checking other components. It could be a bad relay, shorted module or wire. The three speed transmissions are much more reliable than the four speed overdrive transmissions but with age and miles things can go wrong and parts will wear out.

SOURCE: automatic 3 speed transmission wont shift out of first gear

that is what they consider safe mode for those transmissions, they are a very smart electronic transmission it does that so you dont ruin the trans.
It has detected a problem and you must take it to a tech and have the codes pulled, could be as simple as a sensor or solenoid pack

SOURCE: transmission wont shift on 93 plymouth voyager

Do you know if you have a 3 speed trans or a 4 speed trans? If it is a 4 speed , the (D) on the shift indicator will have a box around it. I need to know which transmission you have, then I can help.

J30 won't shift gears

When the car was jump started, you may have caused a voltage surge that affected the on-board computer module; and/or the computer module for the transmission.

Another possibility, once you disconnected your battery, you may have disrupted the on-board memory codes- such as the transmission's adaptive settings- so you may have to bring the car to the dealer repair shop or a transmission shop. Even if you take it to a local auto repairman, make sure he/she is an ASE certified mechanic.

Just had battery replaced and now right side windows won't roll down.

Remove the battery negative cable for 5 minutes to reset the body control module and see if that corrects the problem. This can be a coincidence you know.

04 CTS Ignition Key Stuck, but I can remove the key and restart after a battery disconnect

The automatic transmission shift lock control system is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the engine is running. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components.
• The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid
• The brake switch
• The rear integration module (RIM)
• The transmission control module (TCM) or powertrain control module (PCM)
With the ignition ON, battery positive voltage is supplied to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid from the ignition 3 relay. The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is controlled by the rear integration module. When the rear integration module (RIM) receives a class 2 serial data message from the transmission control module (TCM) or powertrain control module (PCM) indicating that the shift lever is in the PARK position the rear integration module (RIM) grounds the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid control circuit. This causes the solenoid to energize mechanically locking the shift lever in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal the rear integration module receives the brake applied signal and turns off the ground to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid control circuit. This allows the shift lever to be moved out of the PARK position.

1996 Plymouth voyager van newly rebuilt transmission put it in and it does not shift stuck in 1st gear does not shift all gears are there but upon acceleration it does not shift

On the transmission is the control module connected? From that point the connector on the transmission module follow it ,now is that harness junction connected(they should spit off) . If everything is connected with a scan tool they have to reset the index value, reset the tire do a transmission relearn and a battery quick disconnect. Before they can do all this you need to disconnect battery and put the terminal together, The old transmission adaptive strategy is still in the ECM,this is one of the challenges of voyagers rebuild and replace transmission Now you know why transmission shop dont want to do this work for voyagers

Lexus rx300 2002 hard shift between 1st and 2nd. Fluid and filter changed 3000mi ago, car has 93000mi

The 1999-2003 Lexus RX300 models have a common failure of the engine computer that causes the harsh shifting of the transmission. You need to get the computer (ECM - Engine Control Module) rebuilt or replaced before it causes permanent damage to the transmission. Even if the transmission is already ruined, the ECM will still need to be repaired. Most often, the transmission is fine though, and rebuilding the ECM will restore the smooth shifts that the Lexus should have. Circuit Board Medics can rebuild the ECM and reprogram it so that you only have to plug it back in when you get it back. See the link below:
