91 Toyota Camry Transmission Trouble

Hello, I have a 1991 Toyota Camry Wagon V6 with an automatic transmission and 66,000 original miles on it. Today I put the car in reverse and noticed the rpm's went up while the car struggled to move in reverse... After backing out of the space I put it in drive and drove without a problem for about one mile when all of a sudden the car felt as if it was in nuetral... No Drive, No Reverse, No 1 or 2.... Nothing. It's like being in nuetral. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Automatic transmission. Hesitstes to engage.

Possible fault is within the gear box. it could be that the rpm governor is not reacting accordingly, have you changed the transmission oil? if not replace with the original grade. Also check if the brakes arre jammed by lifting up each wheel and checking for free movement. please respond if this will solve your issue.

1991 toyota camry automatic. Transmission is fine

sounds like you may not even have a 4th gear. worst thing is you may need a new transmission. try putting in some "Lucas Transmission Fix" it's like $12 at Autozone.. If that doesn't help, take it to a transmission shop and have them check inside your transmission to see if you need a new transmission or if it's something that could be fixed. It may even be a sensor.

My 91 Camry DX is sluggish on hills. It just started, used to go up with no problems.

Hmmmm, have you kept your services up? if the car has done a lot of miles the engine may be tired. The transmission may need to be services, lastly, check your transmission fluid level, it sounds low. Good luck

New engine for '92 Camry wagon?

a new engine is $25-35,000 dollars(if Toyota even has them) The rebuilt engines are very good. 3 yrs-unlimited miles on repairs/replace engine. Get a name brand engine like Jasper or Atk or BulletProof or Gopher. These ARE Toyota engines rebuilt(sometime better than original) The transmission has evidently been a great one(mine has 185,000 miles).

You've done great on this car. But to replace engine and transmission; you looking labor and parts:$7-8,000. If you fix it, it will last forever, and you'll know it's good.

Or you could buy a certified used Toyota, and buy an extended warranty.

The only other thing is to buy new-$20-25,000 for a new Camary v/6 ( I don't know if they even make the wagon anymore)

I hope this has helped. Good Luck with whatever you decide.
