While driving the speedometer and odometer will stop working and then they will come back (randomly). Also noticed that tapping on the plaster cover for the instrument panel will make the speedomter work for a little while. The dealership was not able to help because they could not duplicate the problem and did not see anything in the diagnostic test. Any suggestions on what might be the problem?

speedomenter cable may be broke or speed gear may be bad

Since your speedometers work, the problem is in the gearing to the trip and mileage odometers. Simple problem, major pain to fix but, remove instrument cluster - you'll have to remove speedo cable to get it out. Use the old Mark I eyeball to check for broken parts. Might even have to drop steering column - disconnect air bag first!

OdometerGears.com has the gears and a pictorial on how to replace the broken gears to get the odometer work again. How to: http://www.odometergears.com/subpages/MustangHowTo.html
The gears are $25.00 each and $4.00 shipping If both the drive and worm gear are bad the total is only $54.00 for both.
